Everyone hates this party, but we don't hate eachother.
We just do it. What is the boss telling us by having this every year? Is it really about the money? Maybe he is embarrassed to hang out with us. Isn't is about more than getting together and eating food? I'm not asking him.

If Mr. Boss were embarrassed to be with his employees, then he wouldn't have suggested the in-office potluck.

Having a potluck is more bothersome than having the party catered. Yet, a potluck is more intimate and friendly than the other option.

Do you hate making the food, or the get-together. If it's the food that you don't care to make, suggest having the party catered, and everybody pitches in with the expense. Or, better yet, go to a restaurant! You can decide on the financial situation of your boss----or his personality.

Don't ask your boss, make your suggestion, instead.

Good luck!

I feel ,if an employer cannot afford to give a party away from the work place then he should not give a party, and if he does for heavens sakes pay for the food. The few measly dollars he'll put into this party let him give that to all his employees in an envelope, better there than at a party everyone hates....You all would be better off and have a better time if you choose a restaurant(also less work for the employees),everyone pays for their own meal, exchange little gifts, laugh and be merry....

It could just be he doesn't want the expense of a Holiday Party. My boss does nothing. No parties, no potlock, nothing. Right after Thanksgiving someone asked him if he planned on anything this year. He said "do you have a job here". They replied "yes"? He then said " Merry ****ing Christmas". Real professional huh? The company is doing quite well financially. So, just because he does this does not mean the company is in financial trouble.

Some times the boss does not have enough allocated budget to cater a big party. By doing a pot-luck, you get to have a party without much strain on the wallets. In any case, better to have some get-together than none.

Maybe he isn't given money from the owners of the company to take you all out. Sometimes, it is easier to take an hour at work and have the holiday party rather than coordinate everyone's schedule for an evening out. Don't complain, at least you get a party.

I admire Holly's answer. Convey whatever that can be opened and shared at the social gathering (a excellent bottle of wine involves intellect). You don't want to get her some thing private reminiscent of jewelry. It'll make you show up to be a brown nostril.

We are doing an in-office holiday potluck, too because we're all too busy with kids and families in the evenings to get together for a dinner. And we couldn't do lunch because we have to run the office and can't all leave! We don't mind because he gets wine and we relax together.

Don't read too much into it. He might just be one of those people who don't realize that it's possible to have a party that's not a potluck.

i like Holly's answer. convey something that could properly be opened and shared on the celebration (a superb bottle of wine is composed of innovations). you do not opt to get her something very own including rings. it could make you appear to be a brown nostril.

I'd say he's not doing well financially or very frugal (to use a nice word) or he doesn't like restaurants.
