Those who are always saying that they were a 'former Christian', that is such a lie! Well you obviously weren't a strong Christian by any means. You need to get your facts straight before you say that you 'used' to be saved and 'used' to love Jesus, because if you say you were a Christian before, here's my question for you: How can you possibly walk away from something so spectacular? If you were really once a Christian, you would never want to walk away from believing in someone so amazing. And it's so hypocritical to say that when you 'were' a Christian that God spoke to you (as many Christians say) but then you go to being an atheist and say that God never spoke to you. It just blows my mind away.

It also blows my mind away how easily you all give up. If you say that you talked to God and he never answered, you have NO faith at all! He's always speaking to you, (I know this is so over said) but you have to believe with all your heart, and know that He's there, and you will feel his presence and know that He is there with you.

Jeez you guys, I'm not pointing this directly at ALL of you, I DID say, "those who SAY", and then you lash back at me saying, "I didn't say that!"

If you guys say that it's not "that spectacular" then you've obviously never experienced God's love that He has for all of us and the amazing things He does.

True. It is possible to walk away from God, but you either accepted Christ or you didnt. Many say they were Christians but really werent. Going to church isnt good enough, tithing isnt good enough. Talk the talk, but walk the walk too. Most cant do that.

First of all, it is very logical for people to have been raised a certain way, to have been raised to believe certain things. Like, let's say that someone was born into a Southern Baptist family. Their whole life, from the age of 0-15 they were taught to believe that Jesus was the Savior. And of course they believed it because they didn't know any better. It's how they were raised. But then, as they got older, they started opening their mind, learning about other religions, beliefs, and they started to develop their own thoughts. How can you say that it's a 'lie' to be a former Christian? They believed in Jesus because it's how they were brought up, and they did truly believe it. But once they started becoming more open-minded, they stopped believing, and started believing in something else.
You ask how we can walk away from something so spectacular? Well, I'll tell you this. It's not hard. When certain tragic events took place in my life, when I started learning about other religions, and whatnot...I realized that I was not a Catholic at all. I didn't believe in a Heaven or Hell. I didn't believe in Jesus. I still strongly do believe in God. But nothing more. All that matters is God and ourselves. Because in the end who will we have? Definitely not Jesus.

Perhaps you need to open your mind... let go of what your mommy and daddy have been brainwashing you with. And just step back...take a deep breath...and realize what life really is.

I agree, Irish Gal......it would be like going backwards, to say that I once was a christian. Unfortunately, there are alot of people who claim to be christians, but, who arent really.

That could also be just a tactic used by some atheists to make it sound like a good reason to be a non-believer. No REAL christian is going to change to a non-christian.

It's not that spectacular.

And the "If you don't believe in Christianity then you were never a *real* Christian" is a bad argument that we don't buy. It's just another Christian excuse to make for people not believing their religion. ("Our beliefs are so perfect that if someone doesn't believe them, then it's not that there's anything wrong with the *beliefs*...there must be something wrong with the *person*!!!") It smacks of desperation.

And it's not hypocritical to say that Jesus spoke to you, and then to realize later on that you were either delusional, or wishing so desperately that Jesus would speak to you that you would take anything and consider it to be Jesus talking to you.

I was really, and truly, and devoutly Christian growing up. Now I'm not.

you lit a fire there, good Q, and I agree, there are no 'former' Christians, a person knowing Christ would not walk away, those who dont know walk away, and they never were with him to start, claim Christian and being are apples and oranges. A person can claim Christianity there whole lives than walk away didn't truly know what it was to truly know Him. Many cookies were burned by this Q, it is sad really, for people to be so angry. It is hard to explain what it is to know His love, I can say Im a Christian. I know Christ, and I know His love, I've know terrible trials and hardships, let downs by church and betrayal by loved ones, black eyes and bruises, and still I know his love, Know He will see me through and love me through because I accepted that He is LORD, in control and has my best in mind. He loves me despite my sins against him, just because we sin does not mean we do not love Him. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, without Him we are all DEAD

Jesus...

healing and amazing Why do I have faith in one I cannot see or touch? I may have not seen Him with my eyes or touched Him with my hands but I have seen him with my soul and felt his embrace in my time of tears. I have seen his hand move in my life, restoring the broken pieces and and replacing what I thought would be lost forever. I feel his love stronger every day through the wanting to know him more, opening up my jaded heart to a wondrous strengthening.

So be encouraged, believe what opposition tells you not to believe. Know that when you know Him you will be able to stand against the frustrations, sufferings, trials and sorrows life will throw at you. Know and remember the joy that Jesus Christ will see you through these things with love, grace and peace. By his strength through you. Know that though the storm may threaten to take you over, that what is being done is for His glory and your good, and these present sufferings will pass. Be encouraged that in these lessons you will grow and learn, to pass on to others encouragement and knowledge of who Jesus is.

Just because you couldn't imagine being an atheist, doesn't mean others couldn't. I'll be honest, most atheists were once Christians, but they weren't overly delusional, fanatic, "sticking your head in the sand" Christians.

They were usually just normal people who found that Christianity wasn't very satisfying or reliable. Atheism was the inevitable path for them.

I also believe it's perfectly possible to go from atheism to Christianity. It happens all the time, although more frequently vice versa.

I still believe in God and Jesus, but do not call nor consider myself a Christian. The fundamentalists have hijacked your religion and turned it into an exclusive cult. While many Christians gleefully await Jesus's return, I'm sure he'll be appalled at what has been said and done in His name by many Christians.

There have been many great Preachers throughout history who served God but in there latter days they rejected God and some even started to preach evolution. Just look at someone who spent a lot of time with Jesus, Judas and he did not remain faithful but had different ideas and his security was in money but it was also his downfall. I agree with you that many who say they were Christians most likely went to church but not all have been saved.

I used to truely believe in God , Santa Clause , and the Tooth Fairy .
Then I grew up . My IQ increased . My Logic Quotient increased . My reading and investigational skills increased .
Some people grow up .Some remain childlike . Religions love the childlike people . Says so in all the holy books . We are children unto God .

That is because you are lost in faith Irish.

Let me see if I can help....not that you will listen, because your belief system won't allow it.

You make the claim that I cannot have been a 'real' Christian, because YOU cannot fathom someone walking away from Jesus and his love. I actually understand that, because, when I was a Christian, I used to feel the same way.

Why would anyone walk away from meaning and purpose and love right? How could anyone who 'Truly' believed turn their back on the awesomeness of God?

I have a long personal story, that I am willing to share, if you are truly interested, email me and I will tell you how a Born Again Christian could possibly turn into an atheist.

But if you are only trying to diminish my experience because it threatens your belief system, it will probably be a waste of time for both of us.
