Gold, Frankincence and Myrrh were three items that were necessary in order to perform the proper rituals at the temple in Jerusalem.Granted the incense and oil were the most expensive available, but they were part of the ritual in order to dedicate a Child to God, and the Gold was necessary in order to make the proper sacrifices. I have always felt it was so appropriate that the gifts the Wisemen brought were of both religious and royal nature.

Mary used them.
What do modern mothers do when someone brings gifts to the family over the birth of a child? They don't wait for the child to grow and use the stuff.
Jesus was a little under two years old, what would he need to use gold, frankincense, myrrh etc for?

Jesus, like any good 2 or 3 year old, played with the boxes they came in. :)
