The real question is, why are turkeys so cheap? For most animals, it takes between 5-10 pounds of feed to produce one pound of animal. A 20-lb turkey was probably 25-30 pounds before it was dressed for sale, and so required well over a hundred pounds of feed in addition to clean, fresh water, space to grow, light and heat, antibiotics and (perhaps) growth hormones, and things get expensive. Let's not forget the time people spent feeding, killing, prepping, shipping, and selling the thing. Oh, and the machines involved: waterers, feeders, processing equipment, trucks, refridgerators....

I think turkeys are so expensive because of the turkey's weight and how difficult it was to kill the turkey.

Currently, I've seen turkey at $0.99 per pound (in the US) which is pretty good. That's less expensive than beef, pork and seafood.

they are not expensive the farmer dosent get that much its the middle man and s/market who make the money. The English government has had a cheep food policy for to long a realistic price for most food stuffs is about 50% more for the producer.15 years ago a pig farmer got £1.10 per kg today he gets somwere in the regon of80p per kg How much do you pay for pork products today ????? blame the s/m for the price not the producer.

Because people will pay that price. They make healthier foods more expensive just because they can. That's why soymilk is more than regular milk, why grilled chicken sandwiches are more than a greasy burger, subway is more than McJunkies, etc.

Actually they are not! If you compare the price per pound as compared with most any other meat, including chicken, it's a bargain. It's just that they are priced a little higher this year due to production costs.
