I think automatic citizenship is a good idea. Do you really expect someone born here with no ties to their homeland to go back?

Germany do not grant automatic citizenship to children of aliens born here.
Only when the foreign parents have a permanent residence permit and have lived here at least for six years (and they still living here when the child is born), just in this case the children could be recognized as german citizens otherwise the children receive their citizenship from the parents.
The other possibility, just the father or the mother is not german. When the father OR the mother is german citizen, the child will be automatically recognized as german.
When both parents are aliens applies the rule mentioned at the begining.

I had married friends -- the wife was from Singapore and the husband from Sri Lanka. They were getting their PhDs in engineering in the US and were having a baby here. They were quite open about the fact that they were doing it to be able to stay in the US. In each of their own countries, the government would not grant an immigration visa to the non-citizen spouse. Having a child in each country would not grant them the right to stay as a couple. I had a British friend who said her ancestors had all been born in Sri Lanka, but it would take 5 generations before one of them would be qualified to be a citizen.

Snow Globe, having a baby in the US does not mean the parents can stay.

Only the US does - and that is only because of misinterpretation of the 14th amendment.
