Well, we have a dog who's 6 years of age and today my mum has been saying that he has had a little diarrhoea 3-4 times today with a little blood in it but we don't know why. He has a sensitive digestive system whenever he eats any lamb meat and always gets watery diarrhoea after eating lamb but then it goes after about one day. My mum said that she hasn't given him any lamb so I guess that's not the cause of it. She said she would call the vet but we need suggestions and the actual cause of why this is happening before doing anything. So, I guess that's my question.. if any more information is required I'll add it to the Additional Information section.

The dog's daily food is pig's liver every now and then and chicken legs because he was never keen on actual dog food or treats.. (had those for around 5 years) and he wouldn't go to the trash can because he's always on a leash on his bed and we know him too well to do such a thing.

He looks perfectly fine right now but because I heard my mum saying all about this I decided to ask here just incase. I'll keep a good watch on him all day tomorrow to see if he does the same and if he does then we'll have to phone the vet to do something about it.

Gastroenteritis can cause blood in the diarrhea. My Weimaraner has such a sensitive stomach that she gets Gastroenteritis ALL the time. One time I gave her some squirty cheese from a can and she vomited and had diarrhea, it got so bad we took her in to the vet because we didnt' want her to dehydrate, which is a main concern when a dog has diarrhea. When she got to the vet she had bloody stool. They gave her meds and a shot to stop vomiting and fluids to combat dehydration.
The next time my dog ate a lot of acorns at the dog park, these have never bothered her before, but she woke up shaking, with really bad diarrhea and vomiting, I was in the vets when they opened and they once again diagnosed with gastroenteritis, and did the same as above. They also put her on a low residue dog food that is put out by Iams/Eukanuba. It's by prescription only so you can't just go and pick up a bag at PetSmart.
Totally avoid giving him anything other than his normal dog food and avoid lamb, even avoid lamb and rice type based dog food. You can purchase a sensitive stomach dog food at Petsmart. Don't feed your dog for 12-24 hours, give his stomach a chance to settle down and the bacteria in his stomach and intestines to get back to their normal level.
Honestly, I would recommend taking him in to see the vet just to be sure he doesn't dehydrate.

Might actually be some sort of tummy bug. My puppy had diarreah for a few weeks but was perfectly normal otherwise. Once he had a tiny bit of blood in the stool. Took him to the vet, we tried switchin his food no good (he had been on the food for about a month or two no problems and the whole take away food didn't work, neither did switching). So we took in a stool sample, nothing. Took him back for a dental check and the vet took a sample from inside him, saw an intestinal overgrowth. A few days later we got a culture and sensitivity test of his stool done (and another microscope exam) and it detected the overgrowth and something like salmonella. Of course this had to happen in the middle of a strike at the local university (which has a vet clinic) so it closed and my vet clinic took on more patients so we had to wait longer for results, etc. One day they were so busy we kinda got forgotten about for 2 hrs. That was the day of the fecal exam and dental check. We ended up getting a bag of dog food, several cans of dog food (Royal Canin Gastro Diet) and a bag of Medi-Treats for free cuz we waited so long. Also, we had to keep him there the whole day when he got the sensitivity test cuz they didn't know when they could look at him... so $20 there. $90 for the test. another $30-$40 for antibiotics. Now's he's fully recovered from that only to have a heart murmur. Poor puppy.

I voted on some of the first 9 answers--you have some good advice. In December of 2010, my Godfather had to put down his 8 yr old mini Schnauzer. He had liver cancer and maybe diabetes. A year prior, I noticed some bloody stool one day. It was in the snow, so when it froze a little, I got a sample in a plastic bag. The vet never said anything remarkable about it. In November of 2010 one day, the dog passed what looked more like bloody mucous than stool. After Thanksgiving, he started puking up, losing weight, and there was blood in his stool--when he could pass it. It was pretty sad to have to see this wonderful little dog go like that--but there was nothing that could be done. Your dog sounds very, very ill. Go to the vet ASAP, and if the prognosis is not good, put it to sleep, and know you've done him a favor. It's hard--I know--I put one down in 2003 and my second one in 2007. Then the Schnauzer. Someday, when you are ready, you can get another dog.

I would call the vet first and just let him or her know what is going on. Let them know if the blood is red or black...it makes a difference. Good luck with this. It is so hard to take care of animals and babies since they can't tell you what is wrong or where they hurt! I hope it all turns out well for you.

No way for us to know what is wrong with your dog. Blood in stool is NOT normal, so I would definately recommend a call to the vet. Tell your mom to collect a stool sample as well in case it is needed for testing.

Blood in the stool is not good. It means something is not right. So watch it and take to the vet if it does not clear up.
In his diet to you make sure he gets a balance diet, of chickn, veggies, grains (rice and oats) and any nutritional supplements?? He needs a balance diet to be healthy.

Could be anything from Giardia, to a parasite, to colitis, to cancer.
When you bring your dog to the veterinarian be sure to collect a sample of his diarrhea. Your vet will use the sample to check for parasites (whipps, rounds, hooks, coccidia, tapes, etc.) and I would absolutely request a Giardia Snap Test, OK?

Bloody diarrhea is never a good sign. Have your dog vet checked.
