Alright, I'm writing a book.
Part of the story is when my main character is going to go to jail. Whats something he could have done, that could get him put away for like, 2-3 maybe 4 years? I want it to be realistic so I want to use a crime that would actually give him that time sentence. Anyone?

Strong armed (no gun or lethal weapon) at an ATM. I know someone that served 3 years in and 2 on probation for that crime.

Give the main character previous felony convictions. If there are priors you would have some leeway on terms. Prior convictions would score higher on the sentencing guidelines which would increase a sentence. Two people with same conviction can get much different sentences depending on the scoring. One can get a year in county jail with a year of probation and the other can get 15 months to 36 months in prison.

I would first consider the character you have developed for this man before deciding his crime. His character and background along with the theme of the novel will help you decide. You would not want him in jail for identity theft if the novel is set in the 1920's. You should let the story decide the crime.

I arrested a guy for theft of a motor vehicle that got about 2-3 years, something like that.

Of course it was far from his first offense.

Your question is difficult because sentences are based upon a complex matrix of past offenses and the seriousness of the current offense....

killing his own mother accidently, he didn't mean it
he was enraged and confused and abused and all of the bad things happening to him,
he goes to a counseling place with a group of juvies and the main person in charge of the bad kids
take it easy on the main character because he realized what he done and completely regrets it
