Yes, multiple times.

The thing is that the Marines had more of a visible role in the Pacific than in Europe.

Conranger is right. The only Marines to fight in the European theater in WWII were on Naval Vessels, or assigned to the O.S.S. ( later C.I.A). The rivalry between the Marines and the Army was more hate by then. There were actual comments made by Army generals saying they did not want the Marines in Europe, God help us if they make a breakthrough and get all the publicity. This goes back to WWI and all the acclaim heaped on the Marines after Belleau Wood. Also the Marines were so busy in the Pacific, there was no good reason to pull them into Europe.

It is amazing how many people don't know there history. Differance from WWI to WWII.

No , all 6 of the US marine divisions fought in the Pacific theater during WW2. But during WW1 US marines did fight the Germans numerous times with the Battle of Belleau wood being the most notable example. Other contributors are getting this mixed up with the first world war when they did fight the Germans

For oldmarine08:

the question is specific to World War 2.

Your comment is specific to World War 1.

While there were Marines based on U.S. Battle cruisers used to bombard the Normandy beaches on D-Day, NO Marines were landed, or fought in Western Europe.

The one mentioned in the link was working for the O.S.S. as a spy so he is outside the scope of this question.
