believe it or not alot of cemeteries are limiting the number of floral arrangements that they will accept. not every family wants plants or fruit baskets... also. people die without leaving any kind of life insurance behind for their families to use for the burial.. the average funeral is in the neighborhood of 10,000.00 . this was the case with my brother. all his friends donated to him and i was able to pay the funeral director in full. thank God...

I have never heard of giving money at funerals, but sometimes people do give money to familes because they may be having a hard time paying for the funeral arrangements and it is an act of kindness.

I dont know about that custom. Are you American? All we do is send a floral arrangement or send a donation to the charity of choice of the deceased (It is designated in the obituary or else you can ask the family) We do not bring or give anything at the funeral since there is no one to take charge of it and the bereaved cannot keep track of it.

I have never heard of giving money at funerals. I've heard of sending flowers and bringing food for the deceased's family members.

Most people just send flowers.
If your office is collecting money for someone in the office who died, most likely they are going to buy flowers and a card with the money.

to buy flowers...
well for the greeks when a person dies...they put somekind of coin and put it on the palm of the dead person's hand...they believed that when the person dies they dont burry the corpse instead they float it on the water..this is because they believed the world is like a cd...with two flat sides..so the corpse will float away and in the edge of the earth it will go down which the call it the underworld and the coin is for the Acheron ...who brings them to the place where they will be charged...

Sometimes in liu of flowers you can ask that visitors make a donation to a specific charity. For example, when my friend Brad died of cancer, we were asked to donate to the Make a Wish Foundation in his name (granting wishes for children with cancer).
