I love my work, but no help, mean, nasty customers, etc...

I work very hard and am very dedicated to my company. I put my degree in Marketing to good use. I am not nor ever have been ugly or rude to a customer. I know the business and I want to make sales and be sure the customer gets what they came for.

Then again, often those in retail are lazy. It may not be your fault but many shoppers think that way due to prior experiences. I was in Office Depot with my husband looking at desks. Another lady (african american if it matters) was looking at computers. As we were looking at expensive items and were the only customers in the store, I thought someone would come to help us. Both of us waited for a long time. I finally went to the front and asked for some service. The 4 people at the front called someone to help me (apparently they were too busy sitting around and chatting) who never came. After about 20 minutes of waiting, I left and bought my desk at Staples. I don't know if the lady ever got someone to help her with a computer.

Yesterday I was looking at jewelry at a department store. After 10 minutes with no one coming over to jewelry, I went to ask another associate. She said it wasn't her department and couldn't be bothered to page the associate or a manager for me. Later after the associate was found, she told me they didn't have an item I was looking for, though clearly from the look on her face she actually just didn't know what the item was and was too lazy to ask a manager or to ask me to clarify what a jewelry armoire is.

Perhaps you work hard, but as you know many of your associates are barely high school graduates with no ambition and will still be working the same retail job 10 yrs from now. If a person has been in 4 retail stores where the employees were pathetic and lazy, a customer might get a little snappish.

I worked in retail for a long time and I agree with you that many customers are mean and nasty--but do you think that simply b/c they aren't doing your job for you? I've had cashiers talking to their friends about prom while ringing me out, ones who wouldn't hang up the phone to ring me out at all so I had to walk to another register, complaining about their boss to me, and ones who were furious that the customers didn't refold the shirts and they had to do it. I'm sorry but that is your job. Why are you angry that the customer didn't do your job for you?

However the holiday season brings out the worst in all of us. People cutting you off to take your parking space b/c they've been circling the mall 5 times looking for a spot. People who have been shopping for hours, as each store was out of the item they wanted, and are cranky. People who are just sick of listening to the same old track of holiday music played in every single store.

Just a thought that every time you think customers are mean and nasty, make sure your actions haven't left them thinking that all retail employees are mean and nasty.

*****Edit****** As I said, it may not have anything to do with you. You work hard and do your job but can you honestly say the same for your coworkers? And like I said, they may have been looking at 4 other stores where people were rude and had a fight over a parking spot before entering. That doesn't mean they should be rude to you, but like I said--they may be snappish due to their day. Nothing to do with you. I'm glad you were openminded enough to think about what I said--making sure your actions haven't contributed. As you have, good for you. Perhaps you can be that employee that is cheerful and boosts their day. Today I went into Food Lion and the cashier was so cheerful it put me in a good mood for the rest of the day. You have the ability to help that person who is mean and nasty, cheer up and perhaps brighten the day for another.

or the help that you have are a bunch of lazy ******* who slack off,and the customers are rude, nasty and yell at you for stuff that you either didn't do,don't know about, can't help or just plain had nothing to do with

tis the season, doll people should start their shopping earlier adn not expect so much from retail people,we're not magicians...if i say we're out of something,i'm not hiding a pile of it in the back to spite you...we're OUT of it,sheesh!
also we have feelings and needs too..so be patient and nice if you want us to help you out, otherwise when you're rude it makes us want to help even less....

whew!
