My m-i-l suggested a Christmas ornament. Or bubble bath (a nice one!). Socks. A gift card for the LCBO!! Spa gift card? The ornament is good though, or just a card. Or a donation to a charity in her name? >: ) Selfish people hate that, but can't complain without sounding like Grinch's, and you get the tax receipt! What about a gigolo? Sounds like she needs that the most...

A basket full of one small present and empty boxes that has a note in it that states what you could have gotten her but chose not to because then you would say something sweet like "nothing seemed to live up to my expectation. And in the one small present a mirror to see the look on her face when she realizes that you didn't get her anything because in the end she really didn't deserve it. LOL

I had the SAME problem one year! If you have kids get a little phot Album and make a mini scrapbook for her of the kids for the year. If you don't have kids then just make if of you and your husband. You can usually get away with spending less then $50 and she will love it. I did this with my mother in law one year and have been makeing one for her every year. She now looks forward to the gift and it has brought us closer together.

if she is going to hate anything and everything then put your money to better use.
make a donation in her honor to your favourite charity, whether it be heart and stroke foundation, cancer clinic, kids hospital, etc.
they will send her a nice card telling her that a donation was made in her honor by you - and they do not disclose the amount donated. you get a tax receipt, she gets a gift, and the charity benefits from her nasty disposition!
merry christmas sweetie!

I bought my mother in law a snow globe from Things Remembered. The globe is from the Make A Wish foundation and money goes to them. You can get it ingraved as well. They have beautiful ornaments too. Maybe by telling her that part of the money goes to Make A Wish she won't be as horrible to you. Good luck!!

A Gift card would do for her, if she is going to find fault with anything you give her, than let her find fault with the Gift card, you did you best and that is what anyone can do.

A nice big picture of your wedding day so she can remember everyday that you are the one that loves her son by choice not because your his mom. Put it in a lovely frame and write a poem thanking her for the love of your life to give her also. You will seem to have all good intentions but will have your little laugh for yourself :)

A gift certificate to a restuarant or store she likes. It's not very personal, so you don't look like a hypocrite, but it's at least something, so you don't look like a cheapo

A gift card. Sounds like nothing you do will be appreciated, so why put any more thought into it? But you still have to get her something, to keep the peace. So an inexpensive gift card to somewhere she likes to shop or eat would be fine.
