I just read the answer to this the other day. It said, (here I'll just paste the article here for you)
What type of snack do you reach for before a workout? If it's a carbohydrate like a banana, bread, or pasta, you could be making a common snacking error that's interfering with your goals. "People hear that athletes carb load before a race, so they think they should too," says nutritionist Sophie Pachella.

The problem? Reaching for a carb snack before a workout actually keeps your body from tapping into fat stores for energy. If fat burning is your goal, reach for a high-protein snack like a tablespoon of peanut butter, a hard boiled egg, or yogurt, instead. Doing so will force your body to look to fat stores for the energy to get you through your workout. Never exercise on an empty stomach, which triggers your body to tap into muscle instead of fat.

What you eat after a workout matters, too. That's when you want to support muscle repair with a carb/protein combo like string cheese and a banana or peanut butter on whole grain toast, Pachella says.
Hope this helps!

After a weightlifting session, you should have proteins and carbs. Insulin is an anabolic hormone, so spiking your insulin levels after your workout with carbs jump starts muscle recovery and the carbs help drive water and nutrients and protein into the muscles. Vanilla whey protein and fruit juice is a delicious post workout snack. It's like drinking a pie :-).

Eating a an hour or two before you lift is also a good idea. Weighlifting is an anaerobic activity, so carbs are important to help you perform at your max.

If you're working more than 90 minutes in the gym (I lift for an hour and do cardio for an hour), timing your meals is very important. I have a shake, a slice of whole wheat bread, and a piece of fruit 1 hour before my workout, and then something similar immediately after. During my workout, I'll have a mix of gatorade and water mixed with glutamine. I don't mind drinking 50 calories when I'm burning 900 on the elliptical and I've burned another 200 or so in the weight room :-)

To build muscle mass you need a good diet, not just protein and you need to use the muscle with exercise. Muscle is primarily water and people who take large quantities of protein from supplement are missing the boat. You get enough protein from the fruits and veggie that you eat and it is better processed by your body that supplements. A good whole food supplement is http://www.juiceplus.com/nsa/pages/Home.soa?site=Lb53116
