Been watching the debates, over and over again they talk about science and math needing improvement in schools, with Music and art being a side note.
Did you take music and art in school and do you think that helped you learn?
I think music and art helped me, it taught me discipline, it taught me patients and helped me see a larger picture of any situation.

I picked up electric guitar last year (I am now 40) and must admit, parts of my brain are sparking that haven't been for awhile.

I was never much for music (mostly because I sucked), but I loved my (high school) art class. Probably because I had a fantastic teacher.
Besides arts being a joy unto themselves, I do think they helped me learn. I always felt very refreshed going to art class and I think it improved my focus and concentration, almost like meditation.
Besides, art is about creativity. And science is nothing without creativity -- a novel way of looking at things can lead to a scientific break through.

Yes. art in school helped me learn. But i also went to a private school for high school and an accredited 4 year university that had a seemingly endless supply of money. Music and Art are great to have in schools, but as it stands right now, there just isn't enough money to go around. Math and Science need to be at the forefront of any curriculum. Judging by some of the strangely worded questions on here, obviously enough isn't be invested in teaching people how to write and effectively communicate ideas.

Music and art are important to my religious life ,so i think the question appropriate.
Art and music have also helped me in intellectual and emotional discipline and inspiration and comfort.
I had art and music in elementary school but not in secondary ,but i wish that choir and art classes were available
I did join choirs and I still sing in church
While maths, sciences, language and reading skills, knowledge of history are very important
literature, art and music and the other Muses should not be left out.
Many schools do have music and art clubs for study hall time or after school.
Many people are illiterate when it comes to classical,pre-classical and even old folk music as well as illiterate in the area of art history and meeting the great masterpeices of world art.
Some secularists want much great art and music kept out of schools because the former2 are often religious.

I always took two maths and sciences during high school when I couldn't take the AP classes. Never took any music/art, though I certainly wish I had.

Early on, I did. Later (when it was discovered that I had no talent in either) - I stopped.
I do think it's important for a well-rounded education. Especially art history and music history. There's so much we can learn from the art and music of different eras.

Music and Art are extremely valuable.
When we look through history at other civilizations we don't see the successful businesses or powerful political parties, we see the art.
That should show us how important music and art really are.

Music and arts most certainly are a huge part of education. Education is not just "reading, writing, and arithmetic", people! It also includes the arts: drama, music, sculpture .......................... and ALL creative outlets !!
Look around you! Art is ALL around you: in architecture, in travel, in fine arts, in practically every aspect of our lives.............. it is everywhere ......!
I am amazed that this is even an issue!

Math and science are over-privileged in this society.
Schools should help craft well rounded human beings and place more value on liberal arts and fine arts.
