He was an E6 when he went off active duty, and got his e7 about 3 years ago. He's talking about going back active, but he's worried he won't keep his rank.

The general rule is you lose one grade from the swap. General rule. There are a lot of things that effect this. Hard to answer this one for sure.

He'd probably be reduced to E6 again. If he hadnt even been in the Guard for the past three years I think he'd be reduced further than that after that long. Also, I think it matters what school he went to for promotion, some have the opportunity to go to either Guard or active PLDC, BNCOC, ANCOC courses so if he went to the active course he may be able to keep the rank. Best bet is to ask a recruiter and then dont sign the contract until you get what you want.

There are way too many factors that you didn't give data on to answer one way or the other. The bottom line would be the needs of the service. If there is a need for the particular MOS, AFSC or NEC that the reservist holds and if there are vacancies at that pay-grade then it's possible to go active duty and not loose a grade. He really needs to talk to a recruiter and if they don't offer him what he wants then he can always stay where he is at.

From rank E-1 to E-4, you don't lose any rank to go active duty. However , from E-5 and up you need to be at your rank for six months to go active but this generally applies to E-5's. An AGR (Active Guard Reserve)position may be what best suits him. He will be considered Active Duty while working with a reserve component.
