Im getting a PS3 80gb for Christmas. I'll admit I have not looked into this system at all. Is it a lot of upkeep as far as software and viruses? Whats this "backwards" you all are mentioning? Also I was told I need to purchase a wireless router for my home computer internet?

Thanks for your responses.

Also how often are these updates and how do I know I need it? Is this just something I check online?

Backwards compatiblity for the 80GB PS3 means that it can play both PS1 and PS2 games.

You don't have to purchase a wireless router to use the 80GB PS3 if you have an ethernet port in your home that you can plug it into. But if you want to connect the PS3 wirelessly then you will have to get a router.

Usually Sony releases a new update about once a month for the PS3. The last update for the PS3 was in early November and there hasn't been a new one since then.

If the PS3 is connected to the internet, it will automatically notifiy you on the screen when a new update is avaliable. If the PS3 isn't connected to the internet, then just check on the Playstation website once every 2 weeks to see if there is any new updates.

Also, you really don't have to worry about viruses for the PS3 because there are probably hardly any viruses that are focused towards the PS3 and it's operating system. I've had my PS3 for almost a year and I haven't gotten any virus or anything, its running just fine.

Also, the up
