After. Airborne is a separate course, and some units get preference for airborne training above others. 82nd Airborne and 11Bs will probably have top priority for slots in airborne classes.
I had near last priority. As a gunner on a nuclear missile crew, my unit had low priority. You don't want to throw a 17 ton track or LZL out the back of a plane with a live warhead on the round strapped to the launch truss. Nearly everybody has the option to go airborne, but not everybody has equal priority.
We did train for air assault missions, though with helicopters where we took the launch truss out of the track, slapped wheels and jacks onto the launch truss, and flew to a different location for a fire mission in two Blackhawks or one Chinook.

If yo get a chance volnteer for Airborne training while you are MEPS getting yor MOS. If not you may get a chance at AIT. If you chose to be a Parachute Rigger you must complete Airborne School before you got to AIT. Start running now and work on your upper body strength. If you are tall 6 foot or taller make sure you volunteer to be a road guard at Jump School it is your chance to stretch your legs out. Avoid drinking booze until you make it through and get your 5 jump. I went back in Aug 92, and was on jump status until the end of 1995. Good Luck. AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY!

It depends on when the Airborne slots are available. I knew a couple of guys with wings in my platoon at AIT. There were some of us that got delayed at AIT due to our Airborne slots.

It usually is after, but there are cases where you go before. Those cases are usually for MOS's that require this, such as parachute rigger. You have to have the wings to even start the school. If this is the case, you go after basic, before AIT. People that fail are slotted into an MOS that does not require wings and sent to the propper AIT.

After, and if they try to send you to your permanent duty station first try at all costs to go to Airborne school before that. If you get sent to a mech unit, there's a chance they wont let you go.

The guys are right, it's after. Just remember it takes 3weeks. First week they separate the men from the boys, second week they separate the men from the idiots, third week the idiots jump! My uncle told me that one. He was 101 airborne in Nam.
