(i'm looking for slomo @ at least 1080i. Even the HVX200 seems to be limited to 720p in slomo..)

Depends on what you mean by slomo. There aren't any cameras in your price range that can shoot faster than 60 images per second (60i/60p). If a 40% slomo is enough for you, then shoot 1080i60 or 720p60 and slow it to 24fps, then use 3:2 pulldown to get back to 60 (unless your main feature is in 24/25p already).

There are some software products that can do better frame blending or motion estimation than just dropping the video on the timeline and using the speed controls. They don't work miracles but some of them help a little. If you're using FCS, bring the video into Motion and use the time controls in Optical Flow mode, which is better than frame blending in most cases.

If you need slower than that, I think it is out of your price range even for SD, let alone HD...

There are some Sony consumer cams with a super slomo 240fps, limited to a 3 second burst, but the image quality is about the same as YouTube.

Edit: P.S. Here is a 1000fps 2k HD camera... it costs $2500/day to rent! Don't wanna imagine how much it costs to buy. ;-)
