Sony has the best converter's. The W series has good ones but the XBR4-5 have 2.5 times more processing power. Go with Sony

The only way to get an answer to this kind of question, which by the way, is the most important question to be asking, is to get professional reviews of sets you're interested in. The processors in TVs, de-interlacers, upscalers, down-scalers are critical to TV performance. One place to start is the December issue of Consumer Reports which reviews the HD and SD performance of numerous sets.

Some of the Samsung televisions have the Farjouda chip inside that does a great job of de-interlace and up-converting. But you have to make sure the model you are looking at has it. (Look on the stickers on the front.)

But now that I have real HD service, I find myself avoiding watching standard def any more so this is less important to me than it used to be.
