Posed as an answer, this now comes as a question. Why is it that over the course of time humans have improved upon, or have rejected and modified, the ancient methods of goat herding yet are still clinging to the religious stories told by those same ancient goat herders? Why it is possible to move forward with animal husbandry, yet continue to remain fawning over some backward mythical deity? We rejected the much earlier goat herder's belief in Zeus and Hera so why haven't we continued to move forward?

Its a matter of meaning in life.

Believers are willing to reject the morality of the goat herder, but not the premise that life has meaning because of the existence of God.

This exists because of well meaning indoctrination.

I love my kids, I think they are special and have great meaning, but I am not going to tell them that there is a God who created them, which gives their lives meaning.

"Is it true that Bronze Age goat herders have nothing to teach us?" I don't think that your examples are particularly convincing, as other mythologies have similar elements and there is a big difference between stating something as a matter of belief ("the world will end in fire") and having some understanding of why that might, potentially happen. Equating a belief in angels and demons with a belief in aliens is particularly dubious. Unfortunately the only lesson which a number of people have picked up from the Bronze Age Goat Herders is the one about how they've been given the Promised Land by God and that if anyone gets in their way while taking it over it's fine to slaughter them down to the last infant.

If you had read God's Word, dear one, you would know that those who were inspired by Him to write it were not goat herders. Most were Scribes, which is the same as a teacher or lawyer in today's world. They were educated men.

Your Christian bashing needs a little polish. *wink*

You are so funny.

Btw, did it ever occur to you that many people still herd goats the same way it has been done for thousands of years, probably not.

So................ to progress one must not have beliefs? How absurd. But you already know that, don't ya?

that is a damn good question

I guess it is because there are still people profiting off the teachings of the goat herders, but not their methods of goat herding

Those goat herders said that if we rejected their stories as false we would all be punished for eternity. Some people are afraid of rejecting those stories for that reason.

Perhaps the goat herders were right. Simply because they didn't have all our modern conveniences didn't mean they were fools. And I'm not sure I'd call our modern society "moving forward". I have a feeling that on the whole, the ancient goat herders were happier than we are.
