Windows and Office are 2 different programs, you can run the same version of Office on different versions of Windows. Also there isn't much difference between Windows XP Home and Pro, document wise anyway. Now if you mean you have different versions of Office like office 2000 and Office XP there shouldn't be much problem going to a newer version with documents, generally you would have issues going to an older version with a document saved with a newer version. Most Office applications will allow you to open older files and normally ask if you want to update the file to a newer version either at time of opening or at time of saving.
If you are getting read issues when trying to open off a USB drive it may be an issue with the USB drive, the drive reader, the drive might eb write protected, the file might be corrupted, it is more then likely an issue with the drive or reader rather then the Office programs. Also are you sure it is Office being used at both sites? Make sure it is the same program not just a universal program.

There is no difference! Between Home and Pro for Word.
And really it shouldn't matter between different versions of Word. Except for 2007 is the only different format of a Word Document!
You don't need to convert anything!

You can't use these files. But you can re-save the original files to make them compatible with you XP computer. To do this: Open the original files on your Windows 7 laptop Click SAVE AS Click the drop down box (underneath the file name) Change that to either "word document" or "word 2003(choose Microsoft Office version of XP computer) document" Put new, saved file on memory stick Open with your XP computer. Good Luck!

The operating system does not determine the version of the word document.
The version of the Microsoft Office software determines the version of word and the file you use.
However, if you try and open the old file with the new software, it will convert it if it needs to.

What are the documents? You should refer to what is written after the dot of the file title not the operating system

windows xp (home or professional) has nothing to do with Word version. you'd have to look at your Microsoft Office Version.
any version of microsoft office can run in either winXP professional or home edition.
in any case, using the "save as" function will solve your problem; you'd have to save your document as another version.

No conversion necessary. Either version will open the document just fine.
