Just to clarify a few things...the Methodist church is not a denominational branch of Catholicism. It is not connected to the Catholic church. NH Baritone gave a lot of good information, but I have to add I haven't been in a Methodist church that doesn't offer communion monthly. Methodism is a mainline protestant denomination. It is fairly moderate in its beliefs. You can get more information at http://unitedmethodist.org/ Don't judge the Methodist church by one church. They vary from small traditional, rural churches to very modern, large, non-traditional churches and worship varies just as much, from being formal to informal. Today, the trend is toward less formal worship. Most churhes incorporate modern Christian music into their worship and people are comfortable coming in jeans. Hope this information has helped. If you're looking for more specific information, feel free to email me.

The United Methodist Church is the second largest Protestant denomination in the United State. It was founded in England by John Wesley in the late 18th century. The church began as a pious sect of the Church of England, but when the American Revolution occurred, and the Church of England lost favor in the US, Wesley allowed the group to become a separate denomination.
The church follows mainline protestant trinitarian theology, with a strong social justice emphasis. They also have a history of opposing alcohol consumption, drug abuse, gambling, and sex outside of marriage. They recognize 2 sacraments: Baptism (via sprinkling [including infants], pouring or full immersion) and Holy Communion. Sunday services usually center around the sermon rather than communion, which is celebrated only on special occasions, such as Holy Thursday, World Communion Sunday, etc. Some congregations have communion monthly.
The government is via Bishops, who preside over Conferences (which are similar to diocese). Ministers are appointed to the congregation by the bishop.

Well the "Book of Discipline" is equal in size to the Bible..
The Book of Discipline out lines or defines what is stated in the Bible.
Then there are other rules laid out..Such as the process of Ordination. How churches are organized.
Generally they follow the beliefs and practices of most other main line churches.
