I love all the answers claiming he was immoral so the book of Mormon cannot be inspired....
If the Christians stating this would read about the lives of the men who canonized the New Testament they would find they were just as immoral as Joseph Smith, which negates their argument against Mormonism if they rely on the NT as inspired.
Joseph Smith was most likely a shiester and a thief, the men who determined which books of the NT were inspired of God and reflected his perfect will were all murderers, thieves and adulterers.
Nothing changes with religious creation and doctrinal belief, it is always created by the same types of men. Why is that?

Did you mean Joseph Smith? I am not nor ever have been a Mormon, but I have to admit this. Smith never attended much school and was basically uneducated. Just how did he write the book of Mormon with such limited education? I have to think the possibility exists that perhaps there was divine intervention or inspiration in Smith's authoring the book.

Well, I'm sure there was a John Smith, though I think the historical records involving him and Pocahantas are a bit dramatized. But hey, it's pretty romantic stuff! It made for a great Disney cartoon. That one is one of my favorites...
Not sure I remember any golden plates in that story though.

Well Yes but I thought all American's believed in John Smith. I don't think he had any gold plates though- you would have to check with Pocohantas. But I don't think Pocohantas was fake.

Considering that you don't even know the name of the man you smear, it is no surprise that you don't believe. You haven't even tried to get the facts.

I think Joseph Smith founder of the Mormon church was a huckster and a scam artist, not to mention a racist fascist and a homophobe, thoroughly unpleasant.
