A six sided star has long been the symbol of King David (second king of the Jewish nation) and his family which would rule for about 400 years. There was a prophecy, given by a non-Jewish prophet by the name of Balaam, that a great king would emerge from the Jewish people, and that his birth would be announced by a "star" in the heavens. It was this prophecy that caused the Wise Men (who came from the same group as Balaam had 1500 years before) to travel to Israel looking for Jesus at the time of his birth.

Jesus was from the family of King David, and had the kings still been ruling Israel, he would have been the ruler. So he would have been entitled to wear and use the Star of David as his symbol.

However the star that appears at his birth is NOT normally called the "Star of David". It is usually called the Christmas star. It is seen as a Christian symbol, and usually drawn with only five points. While the Star of David is a Jewish symbol and always drawn with six points.

The 'star of david' is a six-pointed star traditionally used by Jewish people as a symbol of cultural identity.

It was called a star of the east
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he that is born King of the Jews?" for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him...and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. (Matthew 2:1,2,9)

I never heard it called the star of david either, but since Jesus was a Jew, I quess this could make some kind of sense.

It wasn't called the star of david.

and for deeper students of the Word, it really wasn't a "star' as we know them.
