Short of actually speaking to the person, which isnt possible obviously if they have, is there any other way to find out?

Call the Duty SGT or Custody SGT at the station and if you are family or partner of the detainee they will help you out.

Some jails post inmates names on their website. Use google or yahoo to find "inmate information" in the city you think they may have been arrested in. Or call the local jail, you'll need a first and last name.
