I am having a black and white themed party and would like black ice cubes. Would black food coloring work in the tray and freeze and be ok to drink? Does anyone have any better ideas?

Red, blue and green food coloring will give you the black ice cubes you're looking for. Remember though, as they melt, your drink will also turn black.

TRY THE RED + BLUE FOOD COLORING , YOU HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO TRY IT OUT. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK TRY SOME OF THE THINNER TYPE OF INGREDIENTS YOU'LL BE USING IN THE DRINKS - WHATEVER THEY ARE , JUST AVOID SUGAR AS IT DOESN'T FREEZE + HOLD UP WELL

Hi! Foremost, you have to understand that the colours that you see is acutally not what you think. For instance, you see red ice cube means that the ice cubes reflects only red colour to your eyes, and absorb all the other colours! Similarly, for black object, it's black cos all the colours are being absorbed, and no light is reflected to your eyes! So technically black is not even a colour!! (if you wear a black shirt in a hot day, u will feel extremely hot! That is cos your black shirt is absorbing all the light, and it's energy!) Now, red is at the long wavelength of the visible specturm, meaning that it has the least energy. So if only red is reflected, all other high energy wavelength is absorbed, and these energy can therefore melt the ice. Similarly, blue has the shortest wavelength, but strongest energy in the specturm, but is reflected in a blue ice cube. So, blue ice cube will absorb other colours like red etc, but will not be as much as that of a red ice cube. So, blue will be slower to melth compared to the red. In fact, I think it should melt according to the spectrum from red, orange, yellow, green, indigo, blue, violet, follow by regular ice cube. Regular ice cube is white, so it reflects all the visible light to your eyes, and does not absorb any light and hence will not absorb the energies that comes with the light. Of cos, the above is based on the assumption that ur colouring are of the same material.. cos impurities can change the melting point of ice. Hope this helps! --------------------------------------... Yes, colours with short wavelength has more energy (e.g. blue has more energy than red). But in blue ice cube, blue is reflected. Analogously, high energy light (e.g. blue) is reflected away, leaving low energy light to be absorbed by the blue ice cube. Red ice cube however, reflect away the low energy red light, but absorb the higher energy blue light. So, blue will melt slower than red.

All food colors mixed together will only yield brown.

Why not white ice cubes? Freeze tap water adn they will be cloudy and white. Even then, surely no one is expecting your ICE to be color themed, too. Ewww.

I would probably shy away from black ice cubes, but they do have those "Flashing and blinking' ice cubes. I bet you could find them if you live close to the city. I found some online by searching for flashing ice cubes! Good luck!

Black food coloring can be found in bake ware stores. If you don't have one where you live then look up www.wilton.com they have everything needed to bake and decorate your cakes. They also have black food coloring paste. I however am not sure that black ice cubes are the way to go. I would worry that it might stain or temporarily discolor teeth. At party supply stores they have plastic ice things that you put in the freezer, they come in all kinds of colors, use them in place of the black ice. Well I wish you luck on your party.

if there is black food coloring, it is considered edible, so you will be OK. I didn't know there was black food coloring, but probably is. It would freeze as well as any other color.

why not buy the plastic reusable ones? or maybe put something in them like a marshmallow that is white. Black food coloring would stain teeth, etc.
