There is a series of ideas that you could use.
spray bottle - spray bottles is always good, but a dog could like it sometimes, my dog loves have water sprayed on his face....
coins in a can - take an old coffee can, put 5 or so quarters or pennies in, put a cap on, and every time he/she barks, shake it.
newspaper - roll up a newspaper, and crinkle it near them, or slap it on your hand or wall.
dog whistle - you need to be careful with this one, because this is VERY important and you do not want to get your dog confused and become worse. You need to whistle it at the appropriate times.
Every time you do this, say his/her name, then do one of the tricks above. If he or she listens, give them a treat. and praise them. BEATING is not good! i read the one and beating your dog can make it ill tempered. Also, the shocks on bark collars hurt, and i find it unfair to the animal, call me soft hearted, but i hate them. My parents got one for my dog, i hid it(:
also keep in mind that your dog is just trying to protect you. By barking, he is warning you of intruders. He is just trying to be loyal. And if you have certain people come over often, he will get used to them, and not bark. Hope i helped(:
any questions? email me(:

If the dog barks while you are there, I have heard to teach the dog to bark on command and then correct him when he barks without a command. My dogs barked while I wans't home. So I finally had to invest in bark collars. Now they wear them with the batteries out, but don't bark so it's all good.

i cant believe some of the answers people are giving. of course, dont hit or abuse your dog, thats awful, youll go to hell. second, bark collars are for lazy people who dont take the time to properly train their dogs. DOGS ARE SUPPOSED TO BARK, JUST LIKE HUMANS ARE SUPPOSED TO TALK. so if your dog is barking constantly, he is trying to say something, and he is not asking to be shocked by a bark collar everytime he opens his mouth. try spending more time with him, honestly. he feels defensive or nervous around people msot likely becuase he does not have the human affection he needs! reward him when he is quiet, it will make a difference.
please dont listen to anyone else's bad advice. you can try other gentle techniques (loud noises, water bottle etc) but no electric collars or abuse. please.

I got my dog to stop by making him calm down and sit before anyone is allowed to acknowledge him. for example if someone rings the door bell i let them in my dog comes barreling up excited and barking. I tell everyone not to look at him or talk to him until he is sitting down. Then i tell him to sit and stay calm. That's when the person is allowed to make their move. It seems to work and now he knows to sit down and wait patiently for his hello from guests! Good luck!

Susan F or the person that recommended the dog whisperer book would be the way to go.
I think that training a dog in a positive measure works the best.
