It's just the same as getting any private number plate, go through the DVLA and all will be well. Bear in mind though, in mainland Britain, NI plates have a bit of a stigma attatched to them, since many less-than-honest people use them to hide a car's identity. Be prepared for some attention from Plod, and be aware that a lot of folk won't buy a car with Irish plates, cos they think you're hiding something.

If you're meaning northern Ireland plates with three letters (one being an I or Z) and then some numbers, such as CBZ 1234 or NXI 2345 then there's absolutely no problem in getting them put on a UK vehicle.
When you buy it, you should get all the necessary paperwork; fill it in and send to the DVLA with the documents for your car, they will send you a confirmation, a tax disc with the new reg number and a form that allows you to get no. plates made.
Contact your insurance to tell them about the new number, change the plates and the tax disc, and send the old tax disc back to the DVLA. A few weeks later you will get a new registration document with your new registration number on it.
If you're meaning plates from the Republic of Ireland, I have no idea...

No problem at all i have had an irish plate for 20 years and transferred it from car to car. There is no difference in buying an irish plate than a UK one.

You cannot transfer a Republic of Ireland number to a UK car.
Most Northern Ireland numbers can be transferred to a car in any other part of the UK. It may take about a week longer to complete the transfer, as the documentation has to be processed by both DVLNI and DVLA, but there are no problems.
However, if I meet you, I'll look at your plate, recognise which county in NI it comes from, and ask you which part of that county you come from.
I'm originally from Co.Down, and have a Co.Down number on my car even though I now live in Sussex.

Well, you've just answered your own question. An English plate means something, it means you have money to burn on a number plate, driving around with an Irish plate means nothing other than 'cheapskate'.

Depends if you mean Northern Ireland or Eire (The Republic).
If the former - shouldn't be any trouble unless they can only be sold to a car/owner living in NI.
As for the Republic, you won't be able to get one of those plates assigned to a UK registered car.

We don't really bother with cherished plates over here,, but I can't really see how you expect to register a car as Irish for use in England. Just as we can't go over to England and buy cheap cars there. They must be re-registered and duty paid or the customs might seize them. Single european economy, my @rse
