Before you start this, check your local job market. By this, I do not mean talk to the advisor at a tech school that offers courses in Med Coding and Billing, they will always tell you there is a great need, and they make $40,000 working at home and online.

The actual fact, is, in many areas of the country, there is a need for coding and billing clerks. In very many, the market is completely saturated. Many people find that once they graduate from these programs and even get certification, they look for a position for a year or longer. Often after finding one the pay is not adequate, and the turn over is usually quite high.

At least from my personal use, when I found a billing specialist who was good, I would work to keep them happy at their work. The job is a bit tedious, just running through piles of paper and putting codes in the computer with a little phone work all day long. In most cases, my billers, were trained in office, and never took any courses from an online or tech school, as we would cross train our receptionist, and MAs and allow the staff to move positions throughout the day so they didn't get bored with the routine.

Incidentally, we also trained most of our MAs in office, rather than hiring people who had been trained by other people, in many cases improperly.

Before you start trying to learn any of the health care service occupations, it is a good idea to just watch the local papers for employment advertisements. See how many there are in a set period, and what average hourly pay is offered.

As an example, in my local job market, medical billing and coding clerks start at less than $7.90 an hour and there have been two jobs advertised locally in the past 60 days. I live in one of the 10 largest metropolitan areas in the US.

It could be very complex to get a task within the scientific billing and coding discipline. Especially simply popping out of institution. Most employers decide on to rent individuals with years of enjoy.
