I like to go for walks, but so do dog owners on the same sidewalk. Many of these dogs feel the need to nip and bite me. Fortunately, they have been small dogs and only once have they left any mark. But a lot of times, the larger dogs will lunge at me and the only thing seperating chucks of my flesh from the mouths of these beasts is the leash and an attentive owner.
One day soon, i fear, i will not be so lucky.
Are there any stylish or hide-able teeth-proof guards that I can wear? I presume such things have been invented to protect against snake bites. Or maybe not. But I can't wear high, uncomfortable leather boots when I am walking. And i will need protection at least to the knee, or even higher.
Is a Tazer my only hope?

Buy some cayenne pepper. Once outside, glove up and rub the backs of your legs/feet with this stuff.

It'll work, not harm them and not harm AL Gore's carbon footprint plan (In 2012, you'll have to have a carbon off set for this)

(And so will the dog)

I walk with a stick. Its just for protection in-case I have no choice but to defend. You would be surprised how many "mean" dogs will turn wimpy if you pound the base of the stick on the ground and yell at them to sit down. If all else fails and you get bit, don't be afraid of causing a scene. Confront the owners, call animal control if you must. You never know if the next person that dog bites may be a little kid.

Walk quietly and bring a big stick. Every seasoned walker I see either has a cane he's not using or a big stick he's carrying.

Anytime a dog bites, you need to make a report to animal control, but you also need to be seen by the dr. because dogs' mouths are among the dirtiest mouths that exist (dogs & humans). It needs to be determined if the dog has had his rabies shot, and information should be exchanged as if it were a car wreck, because the owner of that dog is liable for all your medical care & lost work time related to the bite. If the bite is bad enough, consider suing the owner.

I hope I've been helpful.

Dear dawg, where do you live? I also walk my leashed dogs on the sidewalk and honestly have never had a time when I've worried about my chunks of flesh in a dog's mouth. Get a mace spray, they're small and easy enough to carry, have it ready as these dogs approach you. Otherwise get ankle high boots, shin pads, a catcher's face guard, bullet proof vest and padded gloves. I'm joking, of course, because I think this post is a spoof.

What are you doing that all these dogs try to bite you? Maybe you should switch to a new cologne or something. Or maybe you should find a less dog-friendly place to walk.

If you tazer a dog, you'd better be prepared for legal consequences. What if you hit the owner instead? You'll have to prove that the dog was trying to bite you, not just sniff you. It'll be your word against the owner's. If you feel you need to carry something, opt for pepper spray instead.

I agree with the first girl, what the hell?
I am going to preface my respone by saying that I am an ardent dog lover and own a maltese currently, but also have experience with labs, and about ten other breeds.
Now for the way to deal with your problem, and I am not joking:
This is for the larger dogs, depending on size of course, Kick that mutt as hard as you can when they go to bite you. You are perfectly within your rights to defend yourself if the dog owner is not able to prevent their idiot dog from attempting to bite. This is also an excellent way to establish dominance with the dog and it will avoid going near you in the future. If they go off on you call the police and let them handle it.

If not comfortable wearing knee high boots two ideas come to mind. 1. wear a bigger dog on a leash
or 2. there is a device to stop dogs from barking that emits a high pitched sound startling and confusing to dogs they are battery operated and are small enough to carry they will keep most dogs at bay.

OK, that's a bit bizarre.

My recommendation is to learn dog body language and how you can communicate to dogs that you're not a threat. It seems to me that there's something in your body language that is saying "I'm a threat to you and your owner. You better bite me or I'll attack you."

I'd strongly recommend the book On Talking Terms with Dogs. It's short, so you don't need to devote a lot of time to reading it. It's easy to understand, too. It's basically a dog body language book devoted totally to "calming signals" or that body language that tells other dogs that you're not a threat and therefore shouldn't be injured.

There's nothing that you could use that's hidden. But you should try and wear one of those giant padded suits that they use to train police dogs, also put on a football helmet. If they do bite you won't feel it.

Also spray some wolf urine on it, the dogs will run the other way.
