He should provide you one of those basic phones that you can call 911, your parents or other emergency contacts. He has no obligation to get you a phone so you can talk to your friends, send text messages and download ringtones. If and when you have the money get your own, or have him get one under the contingency that YOU alone will pay for all costs related to the phone.

there are positives and negatives when it comes to a teenager having a cellphone:

negatives-
1) phone bill off the roof because you talk toooooooo much
2) you play cellphone games in class while your teacher is talking and you end up failing
3) you use it in school every 5 seconds to talk to your gilfriend who is one floor above you
4) you spend too much money customizing your phone getting all the extra accessories you also spend too much time getting thousands of girl's numbers
5) that's all i can think for now

positives-
1) lets say something happend in school like a tragedy and you needed to call your parents to pick you up or call the police, you don't have a phone you're screwed
2) you go out with friends it's getting too late your parents can call you and find out where you are and confirm when you're going home, without a phone they will be very worried because you're way over your curfew
3) well those are the main reasons. tell your dad. or add more reasons.

ALSO, make sure the bennefits outweigh the negatives when you persuade your parents to get you a cellphone. i don't know any teenager over the age of 16 at least that doesn't own a cellphone.

It is NOT a necessity - food, water, shelter, clothing, education, and medical care are necessities, and your parents are required by law to provide those for you.
A cell phone is a convenience, and, to most of the world, a luxury.

If you really want one, be prepared to pay for it yourself. Get a part-time job, and tell you dad that you will use your paycheck to pay for the phone, the monthly charges, and any additional services on the phone. This shows you are willing to take responsibility and that you appreciate just how costly cell phones can be.

I'm of the mind that teenagers don't need a cellphone unless they have a job and can pay for it themselves.

However, for the sake of emergencies and the like a pre-paid phone like the tracfone or go-fones they have now would work for those situations.

Ask him why and be ready to give a solid explanation of why you need one..and stay away from the "because everyone else has one" reason - parents don't dig that. Tell him you'll help with the bill and ALWAYS stick to the limits of the plan..tell him you won't talk/text while driving either...that's a big fear with teens and cell phones I think.

Just because "everybody has one" doesn't make a cell phone a necessity! Just think of the generations of 10th graders that never had one... and; They survived! Respect your Dad's preference.... it's just such a little thing.

Your dad is right .... Get a job and get credit ...Then get a phone....Why do kids feel that a parent needs to give them luxury's....You are not entitled to a phone ...Unless you can pay for it

You should definately have a phone for emergencies and to let your family know where you are. Suggest pre pay option so the bill isn't a suprise. You should also be able to have a job to pay the bill.

I think that maybe if you get a job and prove to him that you can be a responsible teenager, maybe ya'll can talk about splitting the bill or something....
