I have a 7month-old Great Pyrenees, and he has a leg condition called Panosteitis (kind of like growing-pains). I think his leg has been making him sad and not want to play like usual for the past month or so, so last night I decided to give him an asprin in his food. He was acting very weird (he peed in the middle of the floor and was staring off into space), but then this morning when I brought him in the house, he was so hyper! He was running around the house in circles, and he never does that. I want to know if these weird moods are bad side effects of giving a dog asprin, or if maybe he just feels better..

That is not a side effect of aspirin. Your Great Pyr is feeling better... however... you must try to keep him as relaxed as possible. I can best compare this situation to an athlete taking aspirin before running a race. The athlete will feel great while running, but will feel a whole lot worse when the aspirin wears off. So, try to keep him as 'quiet' as possible as increased activity will only make his pains more severe.

Enjoy your GP, they are awesome dogs :)

Dogs aren't humans - you shouldn't have given a human drug to a dog without first consulting a vet. Drugs prescribed by vets might seem similar to drugs taken by humans, but the problem lies in how different species of animal deal with the drug once it's in their systems.

Aspirin, if given at human dose rates, can easily cause toxicity in both dogs and cats because they cannot detoxify and eliminate it from their bodies as quickly as humans can. The result is a severe gastroenteritis - which may cause them to vomit blood, and possible liver and kidney malfunction.

If you only gave a low dose, call your local vet and ask his or her advice. They may advise you to simply watch your dog, or to bring him in immediately. The symptoms you describe don't seem to be concurrent with aspirin-giving, but that doesn't mean that giving human drugs is safe or a good idea.

Sounds like you overdosed him. Your intentions were good, but you could have easily killed him and sounds like you came close...he's lucky he's made it through the night!

How much aspirin are you giving him? Aspirin is ok for dogs in small amounts...baby aspirin...and not good for young dogs. Ask your vet for the correct dosage next time you want to relieve his pain, or to give you a prescription for an appropriate animal-friendly pain killer.

He made it through the overdose, but may have some internal organ damage from it...you may want to ask his vet about this.

Sounds like he's ok now, but check with your vet for aspirin dosage in the future.

You could also consider something like massage and heat-pack therapy as opposed to chemically relieving his pain. You can even hire a dog-masseuse to come out and do it for you! Regular massage and heat therapy throughout life are probably really good in general for the large breeds.

Aspirin doesn't usually do any damage. Be sure it was aspirin and not Tylenol or something else. Watch his actions and be sure he is OK but I would guess he feels better. No pain and he's a happy guy. My old guy gets a baby aspirin every night. He feels better and sleeps better. It's terrible to be in pain.

Um, Aspirin is NOT an anti-depressant and should NOT be given to a dog - it is a blood thinner and can be very dangerous if used without the recommendation of a Vet.

Please, do not give him any more Aspirin. Only give him what your Vet prescribes for his leg condition.

Don't ever medicate a dog without talking to your vet. meds, even OTC meds could kill your dog! That stuff is not designed for dogs, just like you wouldnt take anything prescribed from your vet! I dont think this is a terrible reaction or anything, but it obviously doesnt sit well with him, Dont worry- he'll calm down.

i think he feels better and had a good nights sleep instead of aching. considering the age of your dog i strongly suggest that you call your vet office and at least speak with the tech about the proper dose. acupuncture would be a drug free alternative...works great for our old dog.

My siberian husky hurt his foot so my husband crunched up an aspirin and put it in his water and after he drank it he felt great and was back to his usual self again. Don't worry about him.

Maybe he just feels better. I never heard of aspirin causing those symptoms.
