Judo.
Both teach effective grappling, but judo teaches more effective throws, jiujitsu focuses on ground grappling, for multiple opponents it wouldn't work, or with potentially sharp objects laying around.
To neutralize (hold, restraint, submit)one opponent, jiujitsu would be more effective though.

Judo came from traditional jujitsu and focused on techniques that were effective and could be practiced at full speed safely without injuring your sparring partner.
There was a huge debate about which was better when judo first came about and a tournament was held. The best judo practitioners fought the best ju jitsu practitioners and the outcome was determined by the final match. A smaller sized judo practitioner defeated the jujitsu practitioner with a throw called the big mountain throw.
Remember that Jigoro Kano the founder of Judo had studied several different ju jitsu styles his whole life before he invented judo. All police in Japan are required to practice judo.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu came from Judo. A Judo instructor from Japan went to Brazil and taught Helio Gracie a more self defense focused version of Judo, and the Gracies developed it into what is now Brazilian Jiu Jitsu which focuses mainly on ground techniques.
I practice both arts, but I began Judo first and the best part of my Judo skills is my balance. Nobody in my class can take me down. I am always able to throw my opponents to the ground no matter their size and I have an unbreakable base when someone has me in the guard position.
Judo has excellent ground techniques as well but brazilian Jiu Jitsu has a slight advantage when it comes to ground work. In a fight I wouldn't want to be on the ground so I would say Judo is better.

Judo competitors are generally better prepared for MMA. Jujutsu has techniques that can't be practiced at full speed safely or are just too complicated to be of practical use unless you have been practicing for a long time. Brazilian jujitsu basically came from judo but takedowns/throws were eschewed in favor of ground fighting so BJJ black belts are renowned for being skilled on the ground.

Jujitsu i would say because, it covers a wider variety of attacks and its not only ground based as some other guy said before... since i do, do jujitsu. Judo however is more on the sport side so its usually aimed at teaching it as a sport but it can be used for self defence. Jujitsu isnt really good against multiple opponents but if you put your mind to it, then im sure you can turn out victorious.
Judo is a offspring of Jujitsu and its said that Judo is a stripped down version of Jujitsu, by taking out all the seemingly useless attacks. However those useless attacks can be off use in a fight as anything can happen in a fight, so more knowledge is of better use.

Judo. Although Brazilian JiuJitsu would be good. WIth Judo one is more focused on throwing the opponent to the ground. There the defender could just give a few kicks to the guy's head or run. The Gracie self defense type of Jiujitsu is really good but I don't think thats quite as popular now as the tournament type stuff you see in the ufc. TV seems to rule even martial arts now.

Judo is a wonderful and enjoyable sport.
Jujitsu is a well established fighting method.
But if you need to defend your self in street situations then you should look towords something like Sambo, Krav maga or other "Kill 'em" style.

Judo is more explosive and requires less commitment to techniques, i.e. not taking the fight to the ground.
A Judo throw, like Uchi Mata, or three-second choke, takes less time to disable an opponent than any JJJ or even BJJ technique.

Jujutsu... Judo came from it.
( You MMA guys are ridiculous. Judo came from Jujutsu. It's really common knowledge. All that violence is clouding your ability to understand truth. )
