i'm seeing a lot of bashing coming from atheists, why can't you accept that some of us have a different experience, and most of us are not harming you in any way?

not confused, under cover. a fundie is anybody who carries their belief to the extreme. when an atheist answers a question for the sole purpose of belittling the asker's beliefs, he's taking it to the extreme.

tuyet, actually there was only one obvious atheist who answered, and his post read like a fundie diatribe.

thanks, you know me, i agree that it's a very small percentage that 'preach' atheism. i enjoy the challenges most atheists pose.

Before coming here I would have said there were no 'atheist fundies'.
The one thing that I have learned from coming here is that atheists can be just as misguided and bereft of logic as any theist.
I realize now that the atheists I was familiar with are not representative of all atheists. There is an entire category of atheists who are just as irrational illogical uneducated and misguided as any theist.
I'm literally stunned every day by people here claiming to be atheists. The theists I personally know would grind up and spit out half of the so called atheists here. They would have a good portion of then converted within an hour.
I've come to the conclusion that the majority of disagreements and fighting here is not 'atheist v. theist' it's 'idiot v. idiot'.
Oh and lest Agnostics think they're the rational middle ground...

Acceptance of a supernatural claim tends to promote cooperative social relationships. This communication demonstrates a willingness to accept, without skepticism, the influence of the speaker in a way similar to a child's acceptance of the influence of a parent. By encouraging this kind of behavior where the most intense social relationships occur it facilitates the lack of skepticism and deters more open minded thinking. They are christian, Muslim or the other religions depending where they were born simply because they were indoctrinated by their parents as very young children. They will go on to indoctrinate their own children and those will go on to indoctrinate their grandchildren!! Atheists have the intellect to see through the conditioning and escape into the real world!! Agnostics have the intellect to see through the conditioning but lack the courage to throw of the conditioning entirely. Sadly Christians are still held firmly prisoner by the self perpetuating brainwashing!! But Christian Fundamentalist is a complete contradiction in terms!! CHRISTIAN – A follower or believer in Jesus. FUNDAMENTALIST One who believes the Bible is literally true and must be followed exactly. Therefore they are followers of the bible and not Jesus making them non Christians!!! But worse is to follow it also makes them ideologists. IDEOLOGY An idea that is false or held for the wrong reasons but is believed with such conviction as to be irrefutable. So Christians have a loving and forgiving god and fundamentalist - well - Just are not Christians!!!!

Yes, they definitely are. And answering a question that's not for you just to stick in your two cents worth of insult is just wrong, no matter who does it. I have answered questions directed to other groups, yes, but only if it meant contributing something positive that I thought might help, not bashing.
Good question.

Your question is pretty closed-minded.
Just because someone has a well researched opinion and is hard to budge, does not make them unable to think. On the contrary, they are in a strong defensive position, and they will not just let anybody in.
You have to make a very compelling argument to budge them from their position.
One other thing, speaking from personal experience, some of us had to really fight hard to be free to think for ourselves. Some of us came out of VERY controlling environments. After you emerge from a place like that you really are careful not to take what is said at face value.

I wouldn't call them "fundies" because there aren't really a set of fundamental doctrines to hold to, but I think there are some militant atheists who can be just as bigoted as religious folk, by saying religion ruins everything, all religious people are of weak/stupid/brainwashed, etc.
This is a very small percentage of atheists however, most of them are cool.

Close-mindedness is part and parcel of being a fundamentalist. It's not possible to be a fundamentalist without being closed-minded. Indeed, it's the whole point.

How can an atheist be a fundie? You can believe whatever you want. I'm not the one that sends out hate mail, go talk to Chosen by Grace.

No. I have no problem with you believing what ever you want to believe in. The problem lies within choosing to adhere to tenets proposed by those with no practical expertise and then attempting to engage in refuting sensible, tested, peer reviewed concepts with nonsensical putty as if it carried equal weight of merit.
