I'm so sorry about the leg hair situation :-) I'm not sure it would've helped completely though - the fleas are after your blood, not your hair. Also disinfecting won't really have worked - fleas have nothing to do with cleanliness, and only specific chemicals kill them, they are VERY tough.
You must, must, must treat the cat, and every animal in the house if there are more. And it must must must be with a proper flea treatment - i.e not one from a store, but a proper one from a vets like Frontline, Revolution or Advantage. Goes without saying you must also get a proper housespray from the vets.
Don't use store-bought flea treatments. They are such a waste of money because stores aren't licensed to sell the appropriate chemicals; their stuff doesn't work.

Seriously if you have fleas that bad you need to bomb the piss outa your house. Get flea bombs, lots of them. Take out any living animals in the house. Take cushions out of furniture and sit them up so the insecticide can get under the cushions and stuff. Take bed sheets off the bed and wash them and dry them in a dryer. Do EVERY room and put more than they reccomend. Then you need to do this once a week till they are all gone. Also, if you vaccuum, change your vaccuum bag and throw it away BEFORE you bomb the house. The fleas can live in the vaccuum bag and mate and then come out and the whole process starts again. Fleas are horrible to get rid of. You just have to keep bombing the house until they are gone. Then when you think they are gone, bomb again for several weeks. And don't bother with flea collars, they don't do anything. Take the cat to the vet and have it flea dipped then get some frontline. That stuff works great. And make sure you put it on the cat once a month. Even when it is not flea season.
That sucks. Good luck and hope your legs feel better soon.

You can take the cat to a vet, have it dewormed and de-flea'd, and while the cat is at the vet, have the house flea bombed. When you come back to the house, the cat has a flea collar or has the flea oil, and you will have no fleas in the house until the cat goes outside again without the flea collar or the flea oil has expired. So keep up on that. But you still may have fleas in the future as it is near impossible to stop without getting rid of the pet(s).

I too have had a flea infestation in my home (I own 3 cats, 3 dogs, a gerbil, 9 birds). I use Frontline on my cats (but I use the dog Frontline for X-large dogs on my CATS & just use .5 on the syringe as this is much cheaper & was recommended by my vet). I also treat my house with a spray called "Knockout E.S.". It is made by Verbac Animal Health. I am only able to purchase it from my vet & I pay 18.38 for a 16 oz can which will treat 2100 sq. feet. I also keep my pets treated for fleas year round at the advice of my vet. I have not seen a flea since I started this regimen. I have one dog that is allergic to flea saliva & it was getting quite costly to bring her in for injections every time a flea came in contact with her skin!
Also, just for your knowledge....people can shampoo with animal flea shampoo. It will not harm you in any way. I have also had to do this in the past & again, it was at the advice of the vet. Nobody has to know but you. Not necessarily a pleasant thought, but human hair is really no different from that of a cat/dog.
Good luck to you! I hope that this is at least of some help!

Relax, this happens to everyone. Call a veterinarian and tell her your cat has fleas. She can prescribe drops that you put on the back of your cat's shoulderblades. Every flea that bites your cat will die and you will be flea-free in about 10 days give or take, until every flea has hatched. The drops are called Advantage, Revolution, Frontline, etc. They are advertised on TV all the time. And they won't poison or hurt your cat. But you may want to use "flea bombs" too to shorten the time your poor cat keeps getting bitten by the adult fleas. GOOD LUCK!

If you live in a cold climate let the house get cold when you go out and don't leave the heating on. Vacuum thoroughly daily. Shampoo you cat in the bath once a week until you get control of the problem.
change clothing and sheets frequently

The safest, cheapest and most effective method of getting rid of fleas is to use a mixture of boric acid and salt. The powder should be sprayed on carpets, bedding and areas frequented by your pet.

We have two cats and I used Advantage or Frontline, both of which I ordered through ebay. Ebay was great at sending the meds asap and it got rid of the problem for us.
