I just bought my girlfriend a Lavalamp, and I know I have to melt the wax inside in order for it to be fully working. I was just wondering though, does it have to be melted everytime she wants to use it?

If you want to see blobs of "Lava" move then the wax has to melt inrder for its density to change and cause it to move.

If you just want to see some light, breifly turning the lamp on and off without it fully heating up will not be a problem. You just won't have motion in the "Lava" . Its just a regular small watt light bulb in the base.

One issue you will have is that the "lava" (wax) will settle to the bottom and will block most of the light. Once the lava starts to float off the bottom you will have more light visible.

The lamp will work just fine even if the "lava" isn't melted yet. But it only takes a few minutes to get hot, so don't worry 'bout it.
