You can use it to start planning, but you cannot file based upon it. You MUST have your W-2s in hand before you can actually file. Your year-end LES doesn't have all of the information needed to file a return properly so you can't even "wing" it.

There are procedures for dealing with a missing W-2, but you won't have to worry about those with your Mil Pay. You can always get a duplicate at the DFAS MyPay site, and in fact that may well be how you'll get it when it's available.

Your Leave & Earnings Statement (most of us just call them paycheck stubs) is a preliminary document. Your W-2 is the final, legal one and the only one you should use to file with. Yes, people try and pull a fast one and use the numbers off of the W-2, but then if there are any differences (there often are!), you would have to do an amended return to fix them. Processing an amended return can take 3 months.

If you don't have the W-2 by February 14th, the IRS does a policy on substituting the paycheck stub, but it's a paper form, requires manual review and will slow your refund down.

You can do a preliminary with it and then cross check it against the W-2 when you get it. I usually do ours as soon as the last one comes through (which is the check that went through today for him!), but you can't file until after January anyways, so you can double check it. Plus that gives you a check to make sure your W-2 is correct. Do not file until after you get your W-2 though.

No, you cannot file from your LES.

We were told today that some w-2's will be released early this year on My Pay. Some are even posted now. What a relief! My Pay didn't post ours until Feb last year. Don't forget, you will still have to wait for your 1099's anyway.

you can't file a tax return before mid January anyway and that may be delayed this year due to congress trying to straighten out AMT mess. What is an LES? and will it have our actual "Taxable wages" on it - those are not necessarily the same as your gross wages - if you file incorrect info, it may delay your refund or cause an audit

You can use is to prepare your return but you will have to have a W-2 before filing.
