An early model with infra-red locking has the immobiliser linked to the locking system, and only gives you a short time in which to start the engine after unlocking the vehicle (about 30 seconds) before the immobiliser re-arms.

Take the key from the ignition, point it a the infra-red receiver (a little dark dome near the rear-view mirror) and press the remote button twice to lock and unlock the doors again. This should disarm the immobiliser for another 30 seconds, which should be long enough for you to put the key back in the ignition and turn it on.

Could be you need a new battery in the key fob. Last thing people think about. Change the battery and see what happens. Good luck.

Sounds like the transponder in your key may be faulty, try the spare key.
