Credit hours are how many hours you spent in a particular class. It doesn't necessary mean that is how much credit you earn. Semester credit is how many credits you get on your transcript. So if you have 5 credit hours and 3 semester hours, only 3 will apply in your transcript even though you spent 5 in the classroom.

Credit hours are the number of credits that a particular class has. Say, English 101 is 3 credits.
Credit hours are how many hours you get credit for on your transcript. (if you finished the class or classes you signed up for, you get the credit if you passed the course).
Hope this helps !
