I would suggest that you try to locate alumni from your college in NYC, and work through them to get to know what's going on. John Jay pumps out a lot of people in criminal justice, so it will take awhile. Check Idealist.com so you have an idea of what kinds of non-profits there are in NYC and what the job descriptions and requirements are. I agree, get a job at Starbucks or whatever, find an apartment with roommates (can't afford to live otherwise--use Craigslist), and get hunting.

Ha. Welcome to New York, there isn't such a thing as a "good job fast" in this city unless you have some family connections.

Start sending out resumes now, but be aware that you may not get any responses until you actually move here. I moved here from the Midwest in 2005 and someone told me a piece of advice I'll never forget: "This is New York. If you can't come in for an interview immediately, your resume goes in the trash."

I wish you the best of luck. You may have to rely on retail jobs for the first 6 months or so until you get your foot in the door somewhere.

Tavern on the green or the Tea house any fine resturant it's all retail there have to fight for jobs there
