Who would you consult if you were having Irs problems?
Still in examination process but uncomfortable....
Have an accountant but ot sure if he is able to handle this.
cpa, tax attorney, a tax service like Effectur? Is it a mistake to use someone out of your state?

Your accountant should know taxes to represent you in an audit. If your accountant is not sure he can handle your audit, he or she should say so and refer you to someone who can. If you want a legal representative, you will need a CPA, Enrolled Agent (like me) or attorney. Except for a correspondence audit, it would probably be best to have a local represent you.

If they are just asking for information, you can respond yourself. If there is some complication and you need to negotiate a resolution, then you need someone who is an "Enrolled Agent". Someone who is just an accountant cannot legally represent you before the IRS in resolving a dispute.

if your accountant is the one that filed your tax return, then you should have him give you assistance, but remember your accountant is not at fault for any thing you didn't provide him, he/she only file the return with the information you provide to him/her.
