With only 5 days for the trip, you will want to spend as much time seeing things as possible and as little as possible driving time. Thisis best accomplished by taking a direct route. From Venice, go to Florence using the autostradas and stop there for at least day - there's a lot to see and do. Try the Ribollita in one of the restaurants - you'll appreciate it with the cold weather. Be careful on the roads. In northern Italy, it can be foggy in the winter. We had about a three day period ending yesterday when the fog was fairly heavy between Verona and Bologna.

A nice stop between Florence and Rome is Orvieto - it's along the autostrada and not out of the way at all.

You will obviously want to spend some time in Rome before going on to Pompeii (which is absolutely worth seeing). If you have time (you probably won't), go on to Sorrento do some sightseeing there and take the ferry to Capri.

Have a great time!

From Venice to Rome, you could drive due West to Lago DI Como, then South through Milan and on to Rome. You really should see Florence, but you would have to drive back East a bit. You might like to drive South along the Adriatic and cut over the mountains to Florence and on to Rome.
The Tuscany region is wonderful too.

If you have time to drive the Amalfitani Coast along the Mediterranean from Rome, a beautiful drive. You could cut off and continue to Pompei, unlesss you continue to Naples, but that would be a little out of the way.
Remember that gas stations will close over lunch time, so keep a full tank.

Have a great trip, and Buon Appitito. Plan on gaining welght. LOL

Italy is great. Amazing culture, food & scenic views. The North tends to be more scenic than the South unless you are on the Southern coast, like around Amalfi. The food also tends to be better in the North, especially in Tuscany. My favorite spots are the tiny medieval towns in Tuscany like San Gimignano, though all the tourist books will tell you to go to Florence & Sienna, which I don't like as well. Rome is amazing also, but has a big city feel like NYC. There is nothing like walking down the street and seeing the Colisseum and the ruins of the Roman Forum! Venice was beautiful as well, but more expensive and the food isn't as good. The only con I see is that right at this moment in time, the US is not the most popular country with a lot of Europeans due to our politics. Many people separate our people from our government and their actions, but not everyone. Learn at least a few key Italian phrases, as with any European country, they appreciate an attempt to speak their language, though they will most likely instantly know you're an English speaker, and start speaking English. As the person above me mentioned, do watch out for Gypsies in the heavily touristed areas (like The Vatican & Sistene Chapel in Rome). They like to pretend to be peasant beggar women with babies (but often the "babies" are just tightly wrapped cloth), and if you pull your wallet or purse out to give them change, you become vulnerable to their pickpocket children who are probably watching from 10' away. Just avoid eye contact with them and don't break your stride, and keep your hand on your purse or wallet and you'll be fine. Go and have an amazing trip. Take lots of pictures and bring back amazing stories!

You're very brave... That's a pretty long journey. Knowing our street, i would advise you to get a GPS system. They are quite affordable now, and they work worldwide. Very handy, especially for tourists.... But who knows, maybe get lost might be the funniest part of the trip.... from Italy... Leo

Well you can visit :Venice (Venezia), Bologna (sorry I don't know if this name is translatable), Florence (Firenze) and Siena before to reach Roma.
Good choice Pompei, it's a colorful place.
Have a nice trip in my country.

This is a very hard trip.

Here is a sample itinerary that you could do: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art53494.asp

Just add on your trip to Pompeii.
