The Biathlon folks certainly think so.
And, yes, professional competitive sports do include getting paid.

a .50 call like the M-2 is efetive becuse of the range and simple shot weight, in world war II it was not on common for US fighters armed with 50 cals to just rip the wingsoff axis fighters and a single hit could take out a truck, and the p-47 with it's 8 50's could flip panther tanks. yuour not going to get that with a 30 caliber like the M-60 and as the AK-47 uses a shorter 30 calibner round it's not going to do that either. The AK-47 was desinged to repalce the PPSH submachine gun with a weapon with a little more range and stoping power so it would be better for urban combat.

on many levels
1 - if At the range, I tend to compete with myself... how can I do better than the last time, did I decrease my time, increase accuracy... depending on what I am working on.
2 - If at the range with friends, yes it is competitive, who is the better shot, closer to bulls eye, finished fastest with the least amount of points down
3 - Organized competitions
IDPA
Bulls eye
3 Gun shoot
CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program)
IPSC
all are competitive to some degree... from what I have experienced, the more experienced will always lend a hand to the less experienced to foster them along in the sport and generate healthy competition

Highly competitive....Some days, you just compete with yourself, trying to fire the smallest group possible with a rifle, or break the most clay birds with a shotgun.....As in all sports, there is a "professional" level, where shooters possess the skills to make large sums of money at it........There are many "purses" involved, plus the "Calcutta", whereas people place bets on the winner, just as in horse racing.......But always, it is the shooter competing against himself....honing his skills to overcome distance, wind, gravity, or the moving target....always striving to improve his consistency and ability.....

Yes. The competition is of all kinds, and can
be intense in spite of being very polite.
No. Except maybe for side bets it's not a
paid professional sport.

The winner gets the loot!
Trapshooting is the second best paying shooting sport after live pigeon shooting.
I've been shooting in a skeet and trap league with cash prizes for almost 40 years now.
