My answer? Well, don't skip me just because I am a Christian. ;)
Please give me a break and read through my whole thing, don't just shrug it off because you don't agree--not till the end, at least!
Okay, so, God wanted to be with us, the humans, and angels as well. He created all of us. He wanted us to love Him, and He wanted to know that it was agape love--meaning perfect love.
So, He created a material planet for us for now. We can choose to love Him, or we can choose to hate/not believe Him. Outside of earth, there is heaven, and there is hell. God's in heaven, and if you hate Him, you won't want to be with Him, right? So the other option is hell, I hate to say.
God let the POSSIBILITY of sin enter the world through letting mankind have free will. He knew that the only way for us to prove our love was to have a CHOICE in whether we loved Him or not, so He gave us the free will instead of making us all love and obey Him.
Because sin entered the world, there is suffering. It's only temporary though, because if you love God, then you'll let Him save you and take you to heaven. If you don't love and believe in God (and His son, Jesus), then you're fighting God and saying, "Screw you." You're biting the hand of the one trying to save you.
So it's our fault we suffer, because we, out of free will, let sin into the world.
Also, look at suffering like this: You come across a bear in the woods.
His foot is caught in a beartrap.
You try to help him out. To release tension on the trap, though, you first have to push the trap down even further into his skin. The bear is freaked out and thinks you want to hurt him. He doesn't understand all this suffering.
All this time, you were trying to help him.
How do you know it's not like that between God and us sometimes? Maybe we're suffering because we will learn a lesson from this--albeit painful, but maybe we could learn it no other way? God is helping us learn lessons to make things better, but we don't know that, so we cry out in anger against Him.
That's MY view. I am a Christian (don't ask what division or whatever. I believe in Jesus and God. I believe the entire Bible, every word. There are no different kinds of Christians when you look at it that way).
Hope that interested you. Please consider it.
P.S. God's there for us through all of this. Jesus suffered on earth too, you know! So He knows what you're going through! Cry out to Jesus. He'll listen.

The Bible clearly states: “The whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.” (1 John 5:19) When you think about it, does that not make sense? This world reflects the personality of the invisible spirit creature who is “misleading the entire inhabited earth.” (Revelation 12:9) Satan is hateful, deceptive, and cruel. So the world, under his influence, is full of hatred, deceit, and cruelty. That is one reason why there is so much suffering.
A second reason why there is so much suffering is that, as discussed in Chapter 3, mankind has been imperfect and sinful ever since the rebellion in the garden of Eden. Sinful humans tend to struggle for dominance, and this results in wars, oppression, and suffering. (Ecclesiastes 4:1; 8:9) A third reason for suffering is “time and unforeseen occurrence.” (Ecclesiastes 9:11) In a world without God as a protective Ruler, people may suffer because they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It is comforting for us to know that God does not cause suffering. He is not responsible for the wars, the crimes, the oppression, or even the natural disasters that cause people to suffer. Still, we need to know, Why does God allow all this suffering? If he is the Almighty, he has the power to stop it. Why, then, does he hold back? The loving God that we have come to know must have a good reason.—1 John 4:8.
To find out why God allows suffering, we need to think back to the time when suffering began. When Satan led Adam and Eve into disobeying God, an important question was raised. Satan did not call into question God's power. Even Satan knows that there is no limit to God's power. Rather, Satan questioned God's right to rule. By calling God a liar who withholds good from his subjects, Satan charged that God is a bad ruler. (Genesis 3:2-5) Satan implied that mankind would be better off without God’s rulership. This was an attack on God's sovereignty, his right to rule.
Consider an illustration. Imagine that a teacher is telling his students how to solve a difficult problem. A clever but rebellious student claims that the teacher’s way of solving the problem is wrong. Implying that the teacher is not capable, this rebel insists that he knows a much better way to solve the problem. Some students think that he is right, and they also become rebellious. What should the teacher do? If he throws the rebels out of the class, what will be the effect on the other students? Will they not believe that their fellow student and those who joined him are right? All the other students in the class might lose respect for the teacher, thinking that he is afraid of being proved wrong. But suppose that the teacher allows the rebel to show the class how he would solve the problem.

The other day I past a BMW by the side of the highway, leaking fluid, setting in a cloud of oil-burnt smoke. The body was badly rusted, the door was dented, and the back bumper was held on by a coat hanger.
I suspect that the neither the designer made it that way, nor the factory manufactered it like that. It got into that condition because the person using it did not maintain it. It s condition is the results of abuse, not a design flaw.
The Christian religion teaches that God designed the world "good". But then he gave the stewardship of care of it to man. It is man who has allowed it. He has failed to do the things he was suppose to, and often done the things he should not. The Christian faith calls that "sin". Each action as a "consequence" - good or bad. Much of what we see in the world today is the results of bad decisions and actions that harm others.
Why did God create the world, if he knew this kind of a mess could result? According to the Bible, it was because he wanted to have fellowship with others "in his image". That is creatures that are intelligent, self-aware, God-aware, and able to undersand and make moral decisions. The danger in doing that is that if God allows moral decisions, then he had to allow bad ones as well as good ones. Or they are not really decisions.
But God could also do something about those sins. He could cover the penalty for those sins himself, which he did through Christ Jesus on the cross. He could change the hearts of those who allow him so that they will no longer want to sin. (Kind of like repairing that old BMW.) And he could eventually remake the physical universe so that it is free of the effect of sin (since no on is sinning any more).
He has done the first, he is doing the second for all those who will allow him, and at some point - when there is no one else needing number two - he will do the third. Until he recreates the physical world, he allows those who trusted him to abide with him in heaven.

I am of the Christian faith. The Christian faith has its roots in Judaism, and espouse many of the principles as found in Judaism. Some of the Christian faith consider themselves either Hebrew Christians or Messianic Jews, but that's another subject.
To answer your question would take quite a bit of time. I would suggest studying the book of Genesis to begin with. You will find that all was good for mankind until the sinning of the principals of mankind against God. You will also find in the books of Revelation, Daniel, Matthew, and a few others in the Bible, both Old and New Testament Scripture, that this period of suffering will one day come to an end. The coming of Jesus the Messiah for His Church is much closer at hand than before. All of the prophecies leading up to that time have been fulfilled. There will be a time of tribulation for the earth after-wards, as has been mentioned in both Old and New Testament. A time of reigning by Jesus the Messiah on the earth for 1,000 years. Then there will be a new heaven and a new earth made, with the old being done away with. This is a very sketchy version of events, and there is much more to it.

I am a Christian.
According to the Bible, God made the Earth because He creates. It's His nature to make things. Through all the hardships that we face, God is there for those whom He chose from the world. Those who keep Him in their minds and in their hearts are promised a time when all the suffering will not even come to mind. God loves those people, he calls them His children.
So it may be said, God is watching those He calls His children go through some terrible things, all the while trusting Him. That would be a proud God, who will eventually see His children overcome all of it, all the while praising Him. As a parent, God is very proud of those who overcome. For us who do that, God is a proud parent. That's why we are here, and that's why God made the Earth.

God did not intend for the world to turn out like it did. God first created Adam. God then decided to give Adam a woman as a companion so he created Eve to make children with Adam and fill the earth. They lived happily in the garden of Eden and pretty much could do whatever they wanted to but were not granted eating from the forbidden fruit. However Satan (one of the first angels who God had created and who thought he could run things better than God) told Adam and Eve that if they were to eat from the fruit they could be an equal to God. Adam and Eve believed him and ate from the forbidden fruit. So God made them leave the garden so they no longer were perfect human beings and there body's started to age and decay. Satan the devil then later on raised the issue that humans only served God because he blessed them. So Satan challenged God to who could rule the earth better. God knew that if he had wiped out Adam and Eve and started over that he would lose trust in his Angels in that he couldn't run things the right way. So God banned Satan to the Earth and is letting him rule now to show who can run things better. This is why there is so much violence, sickness, and death all around us because Satan is ruling. One day though God will say enough is enough and wipe the world of wickedness. That will be the great day of Armegeddon. I know this because I read my bible.

OVER the centuries, the question of why God allows suffering has challenged many philosophers and theologians. Some have asserted that since God is all-powerful, he must ultimately be responsible for suffering. The writer of The Clementine Homilies, an apocryphal second-century work, claimed that God rules the world with both hands. With his "left hand," the Devil, he causes suffering and affliction, and with his "right hand," Jesus, he saves and blesses.
God did not create humans to suffer. On the contrary, he endowed the first human couple, Adam and Eve, with perfect minds and bodies, prepared a delightful garden to serve as their home, and assigned them meaningful, satisfying work. (Genesis 1:27, 28, 31; 2:8) However, their continued happiness depended on their recognizing God's rulership and his right to decide what was good and what was bad. That divine prerogative was represented by a tree called "the tree of the knowledge of good and bad." (Genesis 2:17) Adam and Eve would demonstrate their subjection to God if they obeyed his command not to eat from that tree. *
Someone may ask, 'Could God not have simply overlooked Adam and Eve's sin?' No, because that would have further undermined respect for his authority, perhaps encouraging future rebellions and resulting in even greater suffering. (Ecclesiastes 8:11) In addition, condoning such disobedience would have made God a party to wrongdoing. The Bible writer Moses reminds us: "God's works are perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness, with whom there is no injustice; righteous and upright is he." (Deuteronomy 32:4, footnote) To be true to himself, God had to allow Adam and Eve to suffer the consequences of their disobedience.
In his perfect wisdom, Jehovah God decided to allow the rebellion to proceed for a limited time. The rebels would have ample opportunity to experience the effects of independence from God. History would demonstrate beyond doubt mankind's need for divine guidance and the superiority of God's rule over man's or Satan's. At the same time, God took steps to ensure that his original purpose for the earth would be fulfilled. He promised that a "seed," or "offspring," would come who would 'bruise Satan in the head,' eliminating once and for all his rebellion and its damaging effects.—Genesis 3:15, footnote.
The rejection of God's authority has caused untold suffering. It is fitting, then, that God should use a special expression of his authority to end human suffering and accomplish his original purpose for the earth. Jesus mentioned this divine provision when he taught his followers to pray: "Our Father in the heavens, . . . let your kingdom come. Let your will take place, as in heaven, also upon earth."—Matthew 6:9, 10.

God created a perfect earth and perfect humans. Through original sin (Eve eating the forbidden fruit and convincing Adam to do the same) humans became imperfect and destroyed the perfect earth that God created for us, in turn inducing our own suffering until the end of times. Read Genesis in the Bible.

First of all we have to understand this. -
We are not this material body, IE; Race, color, nationality, Religion, mind, intellect, senses, job, etc. We are all eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. We never die, only this mortal body dies. This material world is not our real home, it is called Maya (illusion) and is temporary and full of misery, only one fourth of the souls come here, and the rest are enjoying blissful eternal loving relationships with our Maker named above. We fell here due to envying Gods position. He made the material world for those who want to try to live separately from Him (Which is impossible because He is actually everywhere). After many lifetimes of trying to be happy in this temporary world one becomes frustrated and board and begins to question their existence. We then seek out real happiness, and when one becomes sincere God reveals how to come back Home. Those who are intelligent, take up the process of self realization (Bhakti Yoga) which begins with the chanting of the Maha Mantra (the great mantra for deliverance from all suffering and illusion), which gives one real peace, happiness and reality. Then at the end of life they can give up all material attachments and fully surrender to God and return to the eternal Kingdom, where there is no more birth, death, old age, or disease and be eternally happy. For info. Go to harekrishnatemple.com Read Bhagavad Gita- As it is by Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada asitis.com I am so glad I know the process how to get out of this illusion and go HOme.

God created this planet and man because he wanted to have fellowship with man.
He created a very beautiful planet and it had everything man needed before he created man. It wasnt until man sinned that suffering came in. God is holy and sin seperates us from him. When you are seperated from God then suffering comes in.
