I'd like to wrap the immobile parts of the gun in order to keep it protected from the elements. When I hunt I do alot of crawling, climbing, and walking through thickets and would like to keep the gun in good condition. Essentially my idea is similar to what they did to the M1's in WWII. Can I do this with my shotgun? And what is the best material to use?

I get a good workout but I don't do much crawling to say the least. Well first off if you have a synthetic stock I wouldn't worry about it. Second they probably make something like this for that gun. Lookup the make and model # of the gun and do a search for aftermarket parts. I imagine they have something like that. If not maybe you can finagle some of your own engineering skills and find a way to make it stay on the stock of the gun. Personally I've never done this. I just use a synthetic stock so it hardly ever gets a ding or a scratch. Not sure on what material to use. Probably some type of camo mesh I'd assume. Maybe check this out. Not sure if its exactly what you are looking for:

I would caution against loose fabric as it may do more harm then good, holding moisture and dirt against the weapon. If you have no plan of using while you are crawling, etc., just use a good soft case and pull it out when you get there or have it permanently coated.

actually you can use "skins" that are pre mqade and slip on, or you can use a "tape" in camo colors available at most cabela's or sportsmens warehouse or similar places.
