This one girl I met recently on Yahoo that seemed all nice and stuff at first, well just because I call her honey, she ends up now making a big deal out of it. Why does she care so much, I don't mean anything by it when I call a girl honey, like it doesn't mean I have a crush on a girl just because I call a girl honey, it is just something I do to try to be friendly. Nothing more than that, so what is she just paranoid of something happening here??? Can anybody please tell me because no other girl has minded me calling them honey before, why would this one mind it? Maybe there is something about the fact that she is from Texas, maybe just coincendence or something, but Texas girls seem meaner than any other type in general, I don't know why that is. They don't try to be, they just naturally are and I just don't get it, but oh well:(

I'm a Texas girl and in no way are we meaner, at least the not the Hispanic Texans. I've met a few girls that ask the guys not to call them sweety nor honey. I'm not sure what the big deal is either. I do however get angry when men call me "mamacita" but I try to let it slide and not make much of it unless the guy makes a perverted gesture as he says that word and looks at me up and down. I scream rape by then LOL. Chickies just like men to be mean to them or are used to it...kindda like this one chapter in "To kill A mockingbird" where the lawyer refers to the white trashy little girl as "mam" and she gets all offended becasue she's used to being white trash. Well...theres my full useless analysis.

Depending on how terms of endearment were used as a child, the parents, the environment, in everyday conversation, will determine how a person reacts and treats others.

In my part of the country, which is up north, the term "honey" was used between married couples only or a gay person. Most of the girls in my high school detested any kind of name, the one that got the biggest reaction was "babe, baby."

It's obviously a big deal to her, you might wanna tone it down a bit and explain to her your position on calling girls, "honey" before it gets way out of hand.

Seems some girls are very touchy being called "endearing" names if you aren't properly acquainted with them. Just meeting someone on the internet and chatting a bit may not qualify you as being close enough to issue such endearments to her. And it's not just Texas girls that are this way.

She might be upset because terms like "honey" or "baby" are often interpreted as condescending (e.g. you're treating her like a kid), impersonal (e.g., "I have a name, why can't you just call me by name?), or perhaps she might be associating it with something negative (e.g., she might have heard some guys call "honey" those girls whom they're playing with). Don't think that it's just some Texas thing, it's all a matter of context. Apologize and move on.

Some women find "honey," and other pet names like that, patronizing. For them, being called "honey" by someone they don't know well is like someone walking up to you and telling you that you're a sweet little boy.

Maybe she just finds it condecending. Stop referring to her as honey and see if she is back to being the nice person you met. If she gets all upset if you call other girls that then she is pretty insecure!

Probably for the same reason that I don't like a strange woman calling me "sweetie" or "dear". I find that it is patronizing and demeaning. If you proceed into a relationship, that is time enough to develop pet names for each other.
