I have a 13 week old labrador and he chews and eats everything. Somehow he got a female product and before I could get it out of his mouth, he swallowed it whole. It was stuck in his throat for a little bit, but I couldn't get a hold of it, because he was biting down. It's not stuck in his throat anymore. He's still drinking okay. I've already fed him for this morning, so I haven't tried that again. Will he pass it okay? Has your dog did this? I'm about to take him to the vet for his rabies shot, but I'm really too embarrassed to ask them. If you think it's something serious, I will.

Thanks in advance.

and he's still running and jumping around like normal. He doesn't seem sick.

Thanks Original and Still best. Yes, I can keep the trash picked up. We keep the trash on top of the counter in the bathroom so he doesn't get a hold of it. He's getting bigger and he can jump up to high places. Thanks for the rudeness though. I'm not that embarrassed to ask, but my dad is.

I was going to choose a best answer already but it's not letting me.

He is eating fine. I did talk to the lady at the vet and she told me there wasn't anything to be embarrassed about. She's heard so many stories about dogs eating pads, condoms, tampons, diapers, etc. She told me to overfeed him a little today to keep passing it through but since he seems to be eating and drinking fine and playing, just keep a close eye on him and if he seems sick then bring him back. She said she hardly ever hears anything that doesn't pass through and she's heard it all.

So, thanks everyone for the answers.

You've heard this from everyone already so you know. You need to tell the vet.

In fact, you must always CALL the vet first before you post here.

I have 4 labs. When I was younger and got my first one, you wouldn't believe the stuff that pup got into - before I learned how to completely and totally puppy proof a house. An then I learned about the miracle of crating that pup when he wasn't in the room with me.

Now if you think that's embarrasing, wait until you have company over an your adorable pup comes running through the living room with your underware in his mouth and chews the crotch out of it in front of your boyfriend/family/company etc.

It happens. For some reason they think women's underware is the greatest thing ever! You will learn that socks and underware can kill labs (it can get lodged in their intestines - and they will eat socks like spaghetti) so you have to keep ALL clothes picked up and put away.

I'm not joking. It's embarassing but it's also dangerous. As experiened as I am with dogs now, My youngest got ahold of sock over a year ago and it was lodged in him. We had to rush him to the vet for emergency surgery. We almost lost him. That sock cost over $800!

The only thing we can figure is it fell out of the laundry basket as I was carrying it down to wash and he found it. I never leave them around.

Anyway - labs will eat anything. Don't be embarrassed to talk to your vet. He has heard it all. I'm sure they can tell you all kinds of stories of things they have pulled out of lab tummys. Then they can tell you the scary stories of how many labbies they lost too!

Enjoy that pup! Keep an eye on him and give him a big hug from me!

See the vet and yes, they will have seen this before. The string on the end of the tampon sometimes gets caught and cannot pass through. The vet may be able to detect where the tampon is by feeling the pups belly, or may do x rays to make sure there is no evidence it is stuck. He might need surgery. I am a vet and about a year ago, a dog died from this problem because the owners left it too long to have him checked. Your puppy will be fine as long as you have him examined.

Personally, I'd call back and ask them how long it should take to pass. Only because (not to freak you out) we had a full grown lab do this and it caused intestinal blockage. The owners didn't know it happened, but also probably werent' paying enough attention to their dog (she couldn't have been pooping right) It ended up being terribly complex surgery and the dog didn't make it. I don't mean for you to start freaking out. My point is find out when you should worry if you haven't seen anything. If they say it should have passed within 4 days, then monitor your puppy every time he goes to use the bathroom for that time. If you don't see anything, get an x-ray before his insides are damaged enough for the surgery to be more damaging than necessary. If you wait and his intestinal walls are damaged, he could be a lot worse off.
Of course, that's absolute worst case and probably won't happen. I'd just get the extra detail of a timeline from the vet for personal reassurance.

Don't be worried... unless he starts throwing up or stops deficating it should not be an issue (This would mean it had gotten stuck somewhere along the way). Just watch for any major changes in mood. If this occurs it would be an emergency situation and he/she would have to go to the vet right away. Having something stuck in either the stomach or the intestines could cause a death of tissue and need immediate surgery. But if these symptoms are not occuring I would not worry. He should pass it without a problem.

I would also suggest that if your dog is attracted to these things make sure that you lock up unused ones and throw used ones in a "locking" garbage can that he/she will not be able to get into. :) hope this helps.

First I would suggest keeping the bathroom door closed so he can't get into the unmentionables.
I'm sory but it would be best to say somethign to the vet. depending on exactly what the dog swallowed it is going to swell and I don't know if it will pass. It may take a while to get stuck and you are running into the weekend with emergency charges God forbid.
I know I wouldn't take any chances and especially since you are going to the vets anyways it would probably be in the best interest to say something.
It is probably to early to tell if there is anything wrong it will take time to pass
Again Please DO Say Something TO your Vet

TAMPON? i hope its a tampon...
really just TELL the vet, especailly if he stops pooing, or eating. Tell the vet anyway, its NOT good, maybe the most expensive period youve ever had if it was to get stuck in the tummy.
I hope it passes.
You want embarrassing.....MY dog got a used pad from my ensuite bathroom bin, bought it under the table to chew on and show EVERYONE....i was having dinner with 5 other friends at the table. Then theres the time the cat somehow found a tampon, and chased it like a mouse...

Don't even listen to rude people!!! I am sure their life is so perfect they just don't understand what normal people go through!! And I am so sure they have NEVER had an accident with trash!! Anyway, I would just mention it to the vet. No need to be embarrassed about it, I am sure He/She has heard worse things that have happened!! But I would imagine if your babe is eating and drinking o.k. he should be totally fine! It is probably smaller than other things he has digested!! Maybe, you could give him some ruffage to get it moving along quicker! You definitely don't want it to be lodged for too long! Good Luck to you!!

Definitely mention it to the vet. The thing is, you saw the dog eat the product, but he could have eaten lots of other stuff you didn't see. There are so many stories out there of dogs being examined for one thing, and a whole load of other stuff shines up on the x-ray. Nature is wonderful, but it won't hurt to get peace of mind from the vet.

If he's going to be goint to the vet anyway, I'd let them know that he swallowed one (tampon or pad?) This could cause a blockage on the way out which won't show up yet. Also, did he chew it or swallow it whole. That's important for the vet to know.

Don't be embarrassed. If you're really not comfortable talking about it, see if you can talk to a female in the office first (if your vet isn't a woman). But I would definately talk to your vet about it - it could be a problem.

Good luck!

Tell the vet. A tampon will expand in his stomach and the materials that it is made out of could really hurt this dog. I promise the vet won't laugh. This is a serious matter and Vets take their jobs very seriously and I doubt this will pass through him.
