most forward thinking courts allow for you to not swear not the book of lies known as the bible if you believe the one truth. So no, it isn't perjury. It is delusional to walk around believing in fairey tales and lies like so many chirstians do.

If I were in a courtroom and were sworn in using a Bible, I would just go ahead and do it. No need to completely invalidate myself in the eyes of the nearly entirely Christian jury (?).
I'd think that saying that I'm atheist would just be asking for trouble. As far as perjury, no. Nobody said that you have to BELIEVE in a god to swear on the Bible.

If you are atheist, you probably would not swear on a Bible as it would mean nothing to you. They don't have to swear on a bible in court either. Just promise to tell the truth.

Lol, that is a superb one. If I ever visit courtroom, i will make it a factor to refuse to swear on the bible. extra advantageous yet, i will swear to be as common because of the fact the bible is... Lol. i don't understand why they nevertheless require human beings to try this, it fairly is unquestionably absurd, to not point out ineffective, human beings nevertheless lie, in many cases Christians.

as a civil servant, i have to appear at hearings, where i am asked to tell the truth 'so help you god'. they are creating a loop hole. if i swear upon a god i don't believe in, and then lie [which i wouldn't do anyway], how can i be accused of perjury? it was a meaningless oath. better to inform the witness of the penalty for falsehood and let him deal with his own gods. mine consider all oaths as falsehood, because they assume a constant set of circumstances. if circumstances change, an oath that relies on them becomes a condemnation. what's true now may not always be true.

Do you Americans actually swear on a Bible in court?
How archaic!
I always thought that was some kind of artistic license/TV cliche - like phone numbers starting with 555
How do you justify using a religious ceremony in a court of law when you are supposed to have separation of Church and State?

You simply tell the court that you are atheist and they will just have you swear to tell the truth - you don't really need the bible thats just a formality.

no, of course not as long as you "tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth." You are not lying about anything by swearing on the Bible. If you say so help me God, as part of the oath it never says you believe in God, so again it's not a lie.
And you would have to be under the oath in order for it to be purjery even if your lying. You would have to finish it before you were under it.

Why would an atheist swear on a Bible?
I think you've been watching too many courtroom dramas.

I wouldn't imagine that would be the case. I could put my hand on a stack of TV guides and if I swore to tell the truth, as long as I told it, I would not commit perjury.
The TV guides would not enhance my truth telling, nor would the Bible for atheists.
