I believe a great singer is rare. But many of us love to sing, even though we may not do it to good! Just watch American Idol and you'll see how many people truely think they have a great voice, when in fact they couldn't carry a tune if there very life depended on it! Now I have been singing since I was about 7 or 8, and I am 47 now. And I even sang on the Grand Ole Opry stage back in 95. But to answer your question, I think that even though you can have voice lesson and what not, you are either blessed with a singing voice, or you are not! I am one who has a great hear for music and vocals too. And that is something you cannot be taught!

what makes a good singer is a person who can tell a great story to the point where they become emotionally attached to the story and characters. Being able to actually 'feel'. you love a singer when they connect to a story and to the audience. A nice voice is great but its nothing without feeling.

A unique sound and a lot of feeling is better than having a great but commonplace sounding voice. I like someone who you know is singing the moment you hear them because nobody else sounds like that, think John Fogerty, Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Johnnie Cash, Mick Jagger. They are old school singers I like.

To be a great singer, you must love what you do. Without the dedication, there's no point in it. That's the only thing I think about when in comes to singing my favorite songs.

Effortless range of voice. To be able to cover a wide range without any hint of a strain in the voice. Josh Groban is a prime example.

i think having voice lessons only guides you to control your voice. anyone can sing but you needs to learn to control it. some people how ever can never sing like mariah carey but can sing like avril. its a gift your born with. others you learn it on your own. some people just cant sing at all no matter how many lessons you take. its all about the person itself.
this is just my opinion. im singing as well. i dont think im that "great" but im good , ok maybe lol according to people who hear me sing at least

How you can range pitches.
Anyone can be a singer if they
know how to control their voice.

They might not be the best at
singing though.lol
