More to the point, the Reality of oneself is distinct from ones MIND. How this is so is best explained by considering the Whole Human Being.
The Whole Human Being, or WHB, is composed of three simultaneously existing and yet separate realms of vibrational energy. At ones Core is the Spiritual realm, which includes ones Shabd Energy (ones Soul), and ones Apapsyche [the Operational Energy of ones Soul]; In the middle is ones MIND realm; And the final third is ones physical realm, including ones brain, physical senses, and ones physical body.
All three realms share the same time and space, but each realm has its own vibrational reality. The brain cannot perceive either the MIND or Spiritual realms. The MIND cannot perceive the Spiritual realm... and in fact, misperceives it as an "Unknown"and something to fear.
Who one is, in actuality is ones Spiritual realm (ones Soul). But who ones MIND believes one to be is itself, and ones physical body, brain, and senses. Since ones MIND directs ones thinking, and ones thoughts, most people believe what their MINDs cause them to believe. This is as it should be, by the way.
Only after a Soul has incarnated many times as a human being [not an easy feat to accomplish] that Soul begins to accumulate some Knowledge within its Apapsyche. As ones Apapsyche increases its Knowledge [the natural result of living many lifetimes] it also increases in "consciousness" and it is this increased consciousness that begins to intuitively inject concepts of Spirituality to one. So those who gravitate toward religion, the idea of God, or thoughts of Spirituality are Souls that might be referred to as "older Souls".
The Spiritual evolution of ones Soul is entirely an inside process, and one does not become cognitively aware of this process until one has made some progress upon it.
Peace

Mind consists of billions of thoughts, if we can get rid of these thoughts and control our mind we can remain distinct from mind through meditation.

When you sleep, your body is dead, but your mind and sprite are busy solving all the problems of the day or visiting some place or the another until your body has had enough break, or if someone (With me usually its my Mother-in Law) , knock on your body. A door is opened only if you want it to or if someone opens it up for you!.

Peace be upon you
Yes by following the God.
Sometimes ,we find that the God order us to do something and we don't know what is the benefit of that and our poor mind say it has no benefit and nothing in it .
But by the time and development of science ,we discover that in this thing which we didn't know its benefit, we find in it our health and comfort.
When we submit to the God ,we be sure that he will not order us by anything harm us , so we follow him by all our energy.

When we are in deep-sleep i.e. sleep without dream. At that time I am neither mind nor senses. At that time I am neither doer nor enjoyer. I am neither man nor women. I am just "am", even I is not there!
Meditation also lead to same state, in which we are aware.

Our mind is an organism. It wears out. It is not eternal, the soul is eternal.
