He already missed the date.

He said he would be back within the lifetime of the apostles.

The fact that he didn't come back... is largely ignored by Christians, regardless.

(That one always makes me chuckle. But then I throw up in my mouth afterwards)

Matthew 24:34
"Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled."

The generation in question began when Israel, on May 14th, 1948, became a nation again after so many centuries. A 'generation' can not be more that 120 years because this is the "age of man" from Genesis chapter 6. The question is how long is a generation. Many believe it to be 70 years. There is no exact time frame given for the return of Christ in scriptures, only that we would know the season. When all nations rise up against Israel and the people of Israel call to God for salvation. That is currently in the mix. It won't be long.

For me, it doesn't matter...my belief that (and the question of whether or not) Jesus Christ is God is the only foundational truth that one need concern themself with when they read the Bible. Everything else is gravy for those who have their fire insurance policy.

My answer for your question is that it is possible it could take that long. If you accept at face-value the Genesis creation account of 7-days [I have heard the literal translation on this is 7 time periods, but have not studied Hebrew enough to know] and you also accept scientific "evidence" that Earth is millions of years old, then it is difficult to accept that the earth has only been here for the historical span recorded in the Bible.

However, if you can accept the literal translation of "time periods" and then bump that up against the "fact" the earth is millions of years old, then it is not a large leap to interpret Jesus saying "I'll be back...soon" could take as long as he so desires...even millions of years.

My question is whether or not it matters when He returns. Today or a million years from now? The only question one need concern themself with is whether or not they are prepared. Was Jesus Christ who he stated he was in the Gospel of John? The Son of God, The Messiah.

For me, the evidence I had to wrap my mind around was the fact that most of the Disciples and many first century Christians allowed themselves to die for their believes. I have never encountered a person willing to die for a lie. And even if one or two zealots would just because they are stubborn, thousands allowed themselves to be persecuted unto death.

No, I believe Jesus will be coming soon...

Not only because I see revelation's prophecies coming to pass in the rapid growth of the 20th century...

It is inevitable that mankind will usher in the tribulation to precede the Messiah's return.

Yes, what is more likely: the people that wrote the gospels were matching the old testament prophecies to the events in his life, and so predicted the coming of the Jewish Kingdom on earth to match, or that a god-man went to a local heaven and is waiting (for what?) to come back? Faith can be so silly.

God is omnipotent. He created the space time continuum. He's outside of our time constraints.

Bottom line, it's a lot easier to believe in yourself as a god than to follow Jesus Christ. But you better be right.

Yes, you're quite right. Jesus actively discouraged us from picking a specific date, while actively encouraging us to always live in readiness.
